M5 vs Hyundai

Guys, tonight I had a kid pull up next to me in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. I sort of laughed and didn't pay attention to him. He downshifted and took off, it was quick. He slowed down and waited for me to catch up. We were on a toll road and the road was wide open. I was in 3rd going about 50 and when I got even with him I punched it, as did he. At first, I couldn't get ahead of him, but then I started to slowly pull away. I was shocked. What the hell? I guess Im going to be ordering the BMS tune tomorrow.

lol... you don't need BMS... if you were in 2nd gear at 50mph with engine setting sport or sport+, D3 or S3, you would smoke him at first place
Hint: set M1 sport+, sport, sport, D3, MDM for some event like this and just floor the gas at rolling lol

I think there is one version that has a V8 and 400 hp and decent tq, but it still shouldn't be a problem, especially on a roll....

Yeah if you start the rolling race from 3rd gear, you'll lose the torque advantage of the F10 M5. Always start in 2nd gear from 60mph and below.

I had some kid try to race me on the highway in broad daylight a few weeks back. He was in an old Merc E55 AMG Sedan. He kept on trying to instigate a race but I wouldn't race him. Main reason being because we were in Virginia. Had we been in any other state I would have schooled him, but being in Virginia, getting caught doing anything illegal in a car will most likely result in jail time, so not worth the risk.

I raced a GTI from the standstill the on Monday evening. I was at a light on a long freeway access road with three lanes that was clear ahead. He was two lanes over and I was coming back from bowling with 7 15lb balls in the trunk. I had the car in M1 which I drive in. That is just sport gas and comfort everything else but S3 cause I like shifting the car myself. He sort of edged forward before the light changed and I wasn't sure if he wanted to run so when I took off I let the car grab and then gave it a little gas and that was enough, he shot off and so I floored it and since I always drive in S3 I ran it all the way up in first and second. I pulled up to him shifting into second and then he held with me up to 55 but the I pulled away and by 75 he was in my rearview but I had to get into 3rd gear to take him. I looked up the numbers on the GTI and it gets 200hp from the turbo. It had two twin pipes in the middle and three color paint stripes on the quarter panels. It's very light and I don't get good traction on the start so he stuck with me better than I expected.

If you are in the wrong gear or caught off guard by a reasonably powered car it will take time to catch up. And as mentioned by GOLFFRR there could have been mods on the car. A 400hp car is not slow and with less weight and the proper jump it will take a little longer to reel him in.

Thanks guys, this helps a lot. I have only had the car about 6 weeks and its taking me some time to learn how to drive it. I now know to be in 2nd from 60 and under. Im sure the punk is telling his buddies that he hung with an M5 for a while. Sorry to disappoint my brethren.

Also read the manual and search "kickdown".... it helps ALOT and your car jumps like a rocket

actually it doesn't due to the delay you're better off dropping gears yourself to [for this situation sub 50] 2nd gear than waiting for the delay then boost.

*yawns, stretches, and begins*

I have created this thread, yes, truly and surely...for the sole purpose of clearing up some misconceptions.

1.) The Hyundai Genesis Coupe (hereafter referred to as GC) is capable of aftermarket tuning that can make it compete with the M3 and the M5.

2.) The GC does NOT currently, and never has been offered in a V8 flavor. It actually comes in a 2.0T and 3.8. However, as of 2015, they will no longer offer the 2.0T. (there is RUMOR that the next gen "true second gen" Coupe will be offered in a V8 flavor, but that is all rumor/speculation at the moment.

3.) It is HIGHLY likely that a modded GC could keep up with a stock M5 from say 30-100, or somewhere there about.

4.) If you would like to see some of the aftermarket capabilities of the GC, check out TurboKits.com and make your way past the Bimmer and Evo kits to the GC kits. These people are pushing serious power to the rear wheels. We're talking upwards of 450WHP, and that's just being modest with the boost. They are currently working on the kit for the 2013+ 3.8 V6 engine, and it will be even stronger. People are seeing 500WHP, or somewhere between 550-575CHP. Not sure if you all use the same terms, so that would be Wheel Horse Power = WHP and Crank Horse Power = CHP. Just to make sure we're all on the same page.

5.) A stock GC would be like throwing a fly at a stock M5...the M5 wouldn't bat an eye and would probably just laugh. However, do not underestimate the insane amount of power that can be pulled out of this V6 engine. It's becoming a game for these guys to see how much they can get out of it. GC's have been a joke really in the past. They were weak, and the 2010-2012's had really bad lag in their turbos. It was just a bad deal altogether. But they fixed a lot of things in 2013 and they are starting to get some attention. They boosted CHP by almost 50 on both platforms and these crazy tuners are going mad over the possibilities.

All of that to say...I would never come into your house and tell you that GC's are better than your M5, not in a million years. But I can tell you that it's never a good idea to ASSUME that just because something as cheap and "weak" as a GC pulled as hard as your car, that the driver must have "sucked". Whereas 3rd does sound like it would have been way low in the torque production for the M5...I can assure you there are GC's out there that would give any stock M5 a run for their money, given the same driver in the same conditions.

What do I know? Well, I am from the GenCoupe forums, and was "informed" of this thread after letting a buddy of mine know that the M5 was being targeted as a "goal" of sorts for people driving their $20k GC's. Now, at the end of the day, your car is fast and full of German luxury, and that's understood. It's just you have to understand there are some of us who may be able to afford a lease on an M5 without problem (since I understand most people don't really "buy" German luxury), but we choose not to, for many reasons. So anytime people can make a car that is 5 times cheaper do a lot of the same things as the more expensive car...they will jump on that opportunity.

If any of you took the time to read this, thank you. *takes bow* I wish you all the best, and please...as always, drive safely! Cheers!

I don't think anyone here underestimates a modded car... Hell I know I do pulls with fully built 3000lb evos. But if the OP said he was reeling him in then it wasn't making 450whp+.

Fact is even if it was 500whp GC OP was STILL in the wrong gear to try his luck.

I'm just always paying attention so when I see aggressive driving coming up I just hit the m and back down the gears to be ready

Kickdown is fine for 99% of things but for anything of substance built or e63/rs7 like kickdown will cost you.

There's a huge aftermarket support for GTI's. Apr has some running into 10's.

I was guessing that was probably the case. His car was fast and he was definitely looking for a race because he spotted me, I hadn't noticed him.

Since reading the posts, I have been doing a little practice. At first, I was a little apprehensive about punching it with the car already screaming at that rpm level, but I was frightened at the result. Good Lord! Indeed, I need to be in 2nd gear at 50 mph! Thanks for the tip, gents.

Im still ordering the BMS tune, for good measure.

DecadenceFTW, thanks for chiming in.
