JB4 Map 1 Day 2...And BOOM Goes the Chargepipe

After 16 months of owning my car I finally convinced myself to buy a JB4 G5. The install went well, car felt good for about an hour of casual driving, getting on it but not much WOT.

Today I let it warm up, took it out, and it was running great. Wow this tune makes a HUGE difference. Car pulled like crazy. However, I was driving in second gear at about 4500 RPMs and BOOM, reduced engine power. I briefly freaked out and then I realized that it must just be the chargepipe. I pulled over and checked it out, sure enough it was. Where it connects to the engine it broke up pretty good around the connector.

I started the car back up (had to drive about 4 miles home) and it started fine. The screen said I could continue on but with reduced power. Everything ran fine. Then when I got home and turned it off, I turned it on again and the RPMs were jumping up and down pretty significantly, the roughest start up I have witnessed. Once the car was moving (just put it in reverse for a second) it was fine though.

Should I pull the tune and take the car into the shop under warranty and just "play dumb". I feel they will know a stock car wouldn't have obliterated the charge pipe. Or does that happen from time to time? I'm planning to get a legitimate chargepipe before driving the car again.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Charge pipe is like $230 for a metal one and it will take about an hour to DIY. Its pretty simple. Tons of us been there. Best not to get the dealer involved for something so obvious. 2nd option buy the part and have an Indy shop install it for a small fee.

No worries about installing it myself, just don't know how fast I can get one here and I need my car ha. I'm going to try to pick up a stock one from someone in the Houston area that they don't need and turn the JB4 off until I have a new one arriving.

Probably better safe than sorry with the dealer though. I just hope nothing else happened that is bad.

Nah you'll be alright. I don't recommend it but part availability was an issue when mine went and I drove around with it hanging on by a thread. I just stayed in really low RpMs so the boost wouldn't kick in that much. If it's too messed up and all kinds of shit can fly in cause its so bad I wouldn't drive it.

Yeah, it is basically shifted about half an inch further towards the steering wheel than it should be, so the hole is big. I definitely don't want to drive it with that much air able to get in. Four miles made me worry enough.

I wish it could just be blocked off of the engine could close a valve or something and then we could drive the car perfectly fine just without the turbo. Oh well.

I would just overnight a metal one. The trouble of pulling the tune and making an appointment with the dealer, you will find yourself spending more time doing that and chances are, the dealer probably doesn't have an opening on the day you call.

I just installed my JB4 G5 the other day, once I put it into map my CEL goes off for a weak spark plug or coil. Cant give it more than 8psi boost without it idling and running like shit afterwords.

This is what I want to do, but I really want the burger tuning chargepipe but it is on back order, so I have no idea what to do.

Probably plugs. I changed plugs before I did a tune not a CEL/misfire at all.

I just don't like that I have to pay an extra $25 to make it black, and I'm not sure which model to get. My car was offered up for sale in May of 2009, so the build date has to be Pre-April 2009 so I believe they would send me the short charge pipe...however my car looks to have the long charge pipe so I'm confused.

And the Burger pipe doesn't require the build date so I feel it can't mess me up ha. I just want the standard long one (which I think cost an extra $50 for the ER one).

The picture of the VRSF one doesn't have the spots for the OEM diverter valves so do they have places for them and it just isn't shown in the picture? That confused me.

Also, when selecting the Throttle Body Flange Style, I am supposed to select the OEM C Clip for an extra $25? If I two day ship this thing it is like an extra $80 though...that's why I just want to get an OEM chargepipe and then not do rush shipping. I need the OEM one for when I go into the dealer for warranty work. Hope that makes sense..

Thanks for all of the replies

^^^ This.. Wish this was the case - driving with the turbo "disconnected", when you run into these type of issues until addressed? Like a "335i Lite".. Go ahead N52 guys, "we need not worry about that"..

Silly willy- that's like the first thing you with a tune- upgrade the charge pipe. I would upgrade that intercooler too, if you haven't done so already.

There is no point to change it for another stock one. Set the JB4 to map 8 and drive like that until you get the new metal one.

OP - I would just recommend upgrading to a metal charge pipe and having it shipped in quickly. It will last much longer and hold plenty of boost if you want to mod more in the future.

I'm in the same boat right now. Installed my JB4 G5 a few days ago and I'm getting an SES light for cylinder 1 misfire. New spark plugs will be here tomorrow and I'm going to check my coils too while I'm installing the plugs.
Getting ~8psi above 4000 rpms without any issues and ~12psi if I'm below 4k rpms.
The DCIs sound amazing too! Can't wait to get the misfire fixed so I can run some e85 and see the true potential!

I need an OEM one in case I need to take it in for engine work as I am still under warranty. And even on Map 8, I still think that intake from the chargepipe on the engine would still suck in exterior air and it could mess it up as the pipe isn't sealed at all to the engine.

Does year matter on charge pipe? Will a 2007 fit the 2009? Does coupe or sedan matter?

Thanks

Sedan will be different. I stretched one on my coupe from a sedan, but it took a bit of work. much easier to just find one from another coupe

Oh ok, well I have a sedan so I guess that's what I need. I've found one locally off the same year car and sedan for $60, probably going to jump on that.
