OEM LL-01 comes in 5w-30. Mobil 1 LL-01 Euro is 0w-40 either way most important thing is you change it at a decent interval.

The differences are small, and there is no doubt that people have run non-approved oils in these engines successfully, but are you going to risk a $25K engine by saving $5 each oil change? Are you a mechanical-chemical-electrical-metalurgist engineer that designs engines? Didn't you buy a BMW because you like the cars and engines that their engineers designed and specified out in every detail? Using your "favorite" oil is due to marketing; using a BMW-approved oil is science/engineering and marketing. |

Redline, Royal Purple, Pennzoil Ultra Euro, or Liqui Molly 5W30 - but to tell you the truth you can use any oil cheap or expensive if you change every 3k miles. I use Redline now.

Tons of people running around in civics, gms, fords neglect the shit out of their car and might run 20k before an oil change. Don't see those cars exploding. Have a little faith in the oil and the car.. |

Mobil1 0W-40, every 7,500-8,000 miles.
In my case, my next will be the high mileage variety.

I've been doing Mobil 1 0W-40 as well in my 328. Every 5-6K miles.
Not because I don't think the oil doesn't last longer than that, but because I don't trust filters for longer than ~7500mi based on conversations with 2 lifelong BMW/Porsche mechanics with 50+ years of combined experience. I plan to keep the car until it doesn't drive anymore so I do it early, and have piece of mind that everything is fresh. Also installed a GoldPlug magnetic plug last time I changed. |

I was looking for the details that made LL-01 different from other syns, which you provided in the initial paragraph. I prefer an eyes wide open view of the world and don't always believe that every "requirement" from an OEM is a minimum guard band. These same engineers are constrained by a multitude of variables -- not all of which result in their best foot forward for Customer use, e.g. HPFP, turbo wastegates, etc. Appreciate the response. |

Dealer oil, because it's the best bang for your buck. You can find it for $7.95 at the dealer, or $6-ish with a CCA discount. The stuff is made by Castrol (for now). It's well-designed.
