E91 wagon cargo cover - automatic opener stuck

The cargo cover on my E91 wagon now does not like to automatically open when I open the rear glass (or 2x click the rear hatch opener). I know that it is not the cargo cover itself because that was recently replaced under warranty, so it must be something on the car side of things. It appears to be be "stuck" - it will open if you wiggle it while the little latches are opened.

Hope this makes sense. Anybody else with this problem? Thanks!

Auto opener on the cargo cover? Is there something different about it on the pre-LCI wagons? My '11 has no such thing - if you open the glass, you just reach in and slide the cover up it's rails.

Hmmm... This may be a bit of de-contenting in later E91s. Mine is a post-LCI 2009 and the rear cargo cover automatically springs up the rails when you open the glass (or when you push the trunk opener from the remote 2x).

Right, I always think of LCI as being post-2009.

So how does it work? Is there an electric latch for the cargo cover to hold it down? And does the double squeeze on the remote actually open the glass? Can't say I have ever tried that on mine. But I have CA so I never touch the fob anyway.

Kind of neat, but obviously one more thing to break! Plus I think I have opened the just the glass twice in three years, and once was just to make sure it actually opened!

Sorry I have no input to your actual problem, but always interesting to find out more about these cars and the differences over the years.

Really? I find the rear glass super useful and often surprises my sedan friends

My 2009 also has this feature. But it's not the most reliable mechanism in the world. One out of 10 times I open the entire rear hatch, the cargo cover would lift as well. Not sure if it's supposed to happen 100% or 0% of the time. But when I open the glass, the cover always lift.

I actually much prefer the "analog" mechanism in my GTI, where the cargo cover is tied to and lifted by the hatch by a simple rope. Works every time and there's nothing to break.

Check the screws in the tracks where it rolls up. I noticed I had a few loose ones stopping it from rising.

There is a weird feature that if you try to open the big hatch door 2x in a row, it will cause the cover to open. This is true if you open twice from (a) the interior button down by the hood release, (b) the remote, or (c) the exterior button above the license plate.
