I apologize if this is belongs elsewhere..

I was looking to purchase an e90 oil change 'kit' from tischer when I noticed it's 5w30.

I was under the impression the n54 engine requires (or rather recommended to use) 0w40 Long life 'German Made' castrol?

Both are fine. OEM n54 oil bottles at the dealership here are 5w-30. The Walmart stuff is Mobil 1 Euro Formula 0w-40 here. Both are LL-01 approved.

Tischer's kit uses BMW OE oil at 5W-30 weight.

The manual and the oil cap recommend 5W-30 but as others have said any LL-01 oil will work great. I use the "German" Castrol 0W-30.

Hmm. So is 0w-40 (LL-01) not suitable for our cars then?

It will be fine. There has been a TON of debate on this issue throughout the years, and I've seen no evidence in my research that a LL-01 5w-30, 0w-30 or 0w-40 makes ANY difference in performance, longevity, etc.

A would yield you these threads and discussions. It's comical how heated they get.

If you are concerned, just buy the recommended oil from BMW?

I use Castrol 0w-30.

4 years and 100,000+ miles worth of Mobil 1 0w-40 use in my car. I wouldn't go any other route.

My dad always used the OEM stuff in his X5 and when I open my oil cap my engine looks brand-new while his doesn't. I wish he still had it so I could show you the difference.

Also, your local walmart should sell the Mobil 1 0w-40 5 quart for $25 and a single quart for $5. I use that and buy filter at stealership.

Use whatever you feel comfortable with!

That gives you 6 quarts. The car requires almost 7 last I checked. Every oil changed I ever did in my N52 I used 7 quarts.

The Tischer kit doesn't seem too bad of a price and the free shipping is cool. Just for comparison, I buy the 5-qt jugs of Castol Syntec 5w-30 at WalMart for $25 each. Also, I order the filters from bavauto.com when they are on sale (I think for about $8 each).

So…I spend $50 on oil and $8 for a filter for each oil change and then I still have 3 quarts left over. I can use the extra to top off between changes or use it at the next change.

Why would it suddenly become "not suitable"???

From the manual

Quote:
Approved oils can be identified by the following specification:

* Gasoline engine
Preferred: BMW Longlife-01, BMW Longlife-01 FE
Alternatively: BMW Longlife-98

* Diesel engine
Preferred: BMW Longlife-04

Approved oils belong to the following viscosity classes: SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40 and SAE 5W-30.

I pay less at my dealer with the BMW CCA discount, comes out to about 65 bucks and I can just pick it up and I also just got a little deal flyer in the mail and they will change it for me for $79 right now!

I was under the impression that the difference between using different oil viscosities was dependent on your climate (amongst the approved oils for the n54)?

Is this wrong?

It is not really dependent on climate. Each company's oil is rated a little different from each other 5 w 30 mobil 1 does not necessarily equal 5w30 castrol as far as viscosity and temperature goes.

So I learned that other than the long life rating requirement - oil type is a matter of personal preference.

Personally, I'd feel more comfortable using 5w-30. I usually buy BMW High Performance motor oil from my local dealer.

I think as long as you maintain a healthy oil change interval and are consistent that is most important. I personally have only had my car for one oil change and I went OEM oil 5w-30. 4k highway mikes later its still showing MAX.

Chazzz' article is interesting though. In an effort to be more economical I was going to change to the Walmart stuff 0w-40 because 10qts for $50 is a great deal and @ 5k mi oil change intervals it adds up. If I was doing 15k mi intervals I might notice some burnoff with the 0w but with 5k mi intervals I imagine it'd be negligible if noticeable at all.

No tracking but I mash the pedal a lot when appropriate.

Thoughts?
