Start button question

Pretty stupid question but it may help me solve an issue of mine so here it goes:

Does just tapping the start button quickly vs. holding it down until it starts all the way have the same effect as each other?

In older cars, just tapping the starter may not start the car, do our cars go through its own starting procedure no matter how long the button is pressed or does holding it down longer have some affect?
