Wind noise from sunroof at high speed?

I get slight windnoise that comes from the sunroof when I drive in excess of 70+ mph. I'm wondering how many people have this issue so that I can decide if its worth taking it back to my dealer to see if they can repair. I just picked it up last Saturday. It drives me nuts, I keep reopening and closing it thinking it isn't shut all the way. There is another thread on this back from last September. There have been a lot of new owners since then, so I'm trying to find out if this is a prevalent problem. Its hard to enjoy the purr of the engine when I am distracted by the wind noise!

My fear is that the dealer will have no clue how to fix it and make it worse!

I've had no wind noise (I presume with the thing shut!) when traveling at high speed. Have your dealer chekc the seals, weather stripping, etc....

Yes! I have found a screeching/tearing sound eminating from (who knows where) the windscreen-roof area when I pushed the 320i above 160 kph in windy conditions. I am also afraid to let the dealer loose on this - I would hate him to test the car at that speed! Perhaps a service bulletin will come out?

Sure there is when it is open orf course. Can't not be any. How loud it id depends on weather though.

Now when my roof is closed, I dont hear anything but I have the tyre, road, traffic, Logic 7 and of course the glorious 6 pot symphony noises to listen to.

Should not have any wind noise when closed.

Did not have any problems with my E36 and E46 closed sunroofs either.

I've only had my car 5 days so I've only had a chance to take it up to about 80 mph. At that - I'm not sure if wind noise is coming from the sunroof but I do hear a sort of high pitched whistling sound periodically. It's not constant but sort of fades in and out and sounds like it's coming from somewhere on the passenger side near the moonroof.

Is this what ppl are referring to? Can someone describe the wind noise sound? I'm just trying to figure out if there's something wrong or I'm just being overly anal.

Ok, of course when its open it will make some noise but when mine is closed I don't hear any wind noise at any speed coming from the Sun Roof.

Of course I'm talking about when it is closed silly people. Kobe, my wind noise sounds like it comes directly above my head from the sunroof. It is not really loud, but it is audible enough when I have the stereo on at a normal level, I can hear it a little more than just faintly. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being loudest, I would say it is a 4, it gets louder the faster I go.

I'd really hate to have to get a wind deflector, I dont' like that look on the car. Based on this poll, the majority of owners don't have this issue, so sounds like my service department is due a visit by me. I've only had my car for less than a week, and the thought of giving her up for a few days to get serviced stinks. I'm going to call my dealership and see if they've ever heard of this problem. My fear is that they'll keep it for a few days, and return it, and either the noise is still there, or they've used some cheap short term fix up solution like a sealant of some sort.

The noise is not loud enough where I can't deal with it and just leave it alone, but since most people do not have this problem, I just don't feel like I should have to deal with it.

I repeat my suspicion that the sunroof is not necessarily the problem, but turbulence off the front of the windshield/A pillar. It will sound like it is above your head, but that is not where the source is. Several folks without sunroofs reported the same problem.

I appreciate the feedback stressdoc. I wish I could test out other 330s to see if it is prevalent in all other cars. I'm so unsure if there is truly a defect or, that is just normal for this car at high speed. maybe my dealer will let me test drive a few 3s on their lot. hmmm

You could also try taping/masking the sunroof trim for testing purposes -- but don't use anything that you can't remove without paint marks.

A high speed wind noise is completely unacceptable for an autobahn tourer. No way BMW would let this get through beta testing in Euro. I noticed several variants of the A-pillar trim on early release cars, and at least one magazine test in April/May 2005 complained of a howl at high speed, something they said BMW would surely fix before release.

Is the wind noise more like the sound of a hi-speed fan or a whistling or maybe like a loud fluttering?

Must be a European thing. Sunroof is standard in US. I don't think you can have a e90 in the US without the sunroof. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

After about 75Mph I certainly notice an increase in wind noise. It sounds like the Climate Control is on medium. Seems to originate from the windshield but the sunroof may also be contributing. This is my first BMW, coming from an old SUV, which was very noisy, so I'm not sure if this is a problem or not.
I'm more curious about it than bothered.

At that speed, I'm enjoying my music too much to worry about the noises...

In my case it is more like a high-pitched howl or shriek and does NOT seem to be coming from the sunroof area. It is loud enough to be heard above the radio when played at 160 kph. The conditions at the time were windy so that may have some bearing.

You can get a BMW nowadays without a sunroof? Damn, I wish they had that option here.

Realize this thread is over a year old (see what happens when you search), but I couldn't find any conclusions on this topic.

I've got a high-pitched whistling noise from the sunroof area that happens as described in other posts - closed roof, around 80+mph with some added wind outside, or around 90+ with no noticable wind. Has anyone found a solution to this? Not a fan of the dealer experimenting with a fix on my car if a real solution hasn't been found.

I don't notice any particular noise coming from the sunroof itself, just overall wind noise in general. Does it make a difference whether the shade is open or closed for you?
