When to put on winter tires?

Just curious when everyone here puts on the winter tires/do you wait till first snow or just drive around with winters on once the temps drop or ??
I personally will wait till first snowfall as I don't want to unnecessarily wear down the treads.

I live in Michigan. So, run winter tires from Nov 15 to March 15

Either first snow fall or when ever it gets below freezing. But do it early cause none wants be changing tires when it's freezing out

I did last week, but I run Nokian WRG3 all seasons during the winter. Wanted to save the tread on my PSS summers

Agreed.
I'm thinking Near end of November on a warm day if nature co-operates.....but more likely I'll keep an eye on forecasts for snow and do it the day beforehand.

I'm getting my winter wheels refinished and then I'm putting on fresh winter tires I just bought. I normally put it on by November 1st-April 1st. We have bi-polar weather here haha.

They typically advise to use them once the temp drops below 7 degrees C, but you'd be fine until temperatures actually drop below zero. Wait until the first snow fall and you'll be waiting in a line up to get tires swapped out!

I already have an appointment for my snow tires towards the end of November. I travel throughout New England, mostly northern Maine.

No, having rims and tires is much easier to just swap instead of swapping rubbers! But it amazes me how many people still bring their vehicle into the shop to have them change out the wheels when you can do it at home in 30 minutes.. Haha

That's true sometimes but some of us like to get our setup balanced. I typically do a road force balance when I swap my setups out.

Was gonna say, all our Canadian in laws do that lol

When I was in Toronto last winter, it amazed me how many premium cars have steelies. Made me think Canadians are less vain....

I put mine on in Nov, but I try to avoid driving in salt as we have a 3rd car. I got Michelin x ice 3's for the Lexus and went -1 to a 225/55-17. Rims were only $110 17x8 MSW, no tpms needed....

After the first frost I'd say...
Getting them Nokians this year...I hear we're in for it!

I'm using the same 18s for summer and winter rubbers- I gotta go to a shop.

So, to answer the OP's original question, the correct time to change is before the first snow. Our first snow is usually after the last week in November, but better to be safe than sorry. Watch the forecast and get ready by the time it gets into the low 30s.

On my car now, with PSS staggered summers.

I used to run 19s, but it's impossible in the tri state.

I'll usually switch sometime between the beginning to middle of November unless there's forecasts of snow that beat me to the punch. I miss Florida weather.

When there's snow in the forecast. I always kept an extra pair of cheap 17" rims with snow tires. You can plop them on the night before if you wanted to.

Oh I just thought everyone had aftermarket wheels with summer tires and stock wheels with winters. Oh well everyone is different
