help with key

I lost my key while the 1 series was put away for storage. I ordered the new key through my local dealer. The metal cut key opens the door and trunk but when I insert the fob into the dash i get a picture of a key crossed out in the cluster and nothing else. When I called the dealer to see about possibly having to have the key programed they said it was unnecessary. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Battery has been checked and has full charge.
