So I'm selling my #1 spot. I apologize for the miscommunication. Thanks
Your problem is in assuming that we think that a waiting list spot ... one that doesn't have to be legally honored in any fashion ... has monetary value. It's fairly insulting to a semi-intelligent person.

There's no vin #. There's no production #. It's just a sign up sheet at a dealer with your name at the top. Whoopie. Go hawk it on ebay where they tolerate that crap.

To the threadstarter..........good luck! You may have better luck selling your spot on some other boards (6sp online, etc.)

I'm surprised to see the amount of haters on this board.

Selling spots for BMW M cars is a fairly usual practice. $2500 is reasonable, I have seen people pay a lot more than that for the E46 M3 in 2001. by no means am i saying this particular seller is legit, but he totally may be.

Some people just have money to burn.

Oh, I remember seeing a lot of those. And they're doing it now for the F430 and the Aston V8 bigtime. The thing is, eventhough the OP has "sold" you his spot on the list, the dealer is not, in any fashion, legally obligated to honor that spot you just bought. The dealer's transaction was with the OP, not you. In fact, the dealer/salesman will probably be a little miffed that he's not getting a cut on something he gave away that had value.

Now if the OP has a signed contract from the dealer, that he paid for, and states is transferrable, then it has real value. No problem selling that.

I could probably head into my dealer, say I wanted to be first on the "waiting list" (which would be a piece of paper with the words 2008 M3 waiting list at the top) and he'd probably do it for me. I could even give him a $1000 check to secure my place in line. Does that really guarentee me the first delivered M3? No. Would it be ethical for me to turn around and try to sell that spot to someone else for a profit? No.

Is it done? I'm sure it is.

PS. I also remember the "waiting list" for the e46 M3 was hugely overstated and 3mo after launch my dealer had multiple on the lot waiting to be sold.

I wish I looked in washington for a m3. In january 2002, i bought a e46 330ci because every single M3 around Los Angeles had a markup of $5000 at that time. Maybe just my bad luck.

He said that he's agreed to pay MSRP for the car. If you're talking about the mark up over MSRP then I guess you could be right. THen again, I would never pay MSRP for a car, let alone OVER MSRP.

Why does everyone wanna be #1 so badly?? I hope they realize that there will be at least a few M3 running around the same town, if not neighborhood, that they're in since we're not the only one looking to buy one.

If anyone really wants an M3 at MSRP let me know. We do not mark up any of your cars over MSRP. The owner and managers do not feel this is a fair business practice. NO BS I can promise you that. You will be added to the list with a 2000 deposit. Let me know if anyone is interested.

you can tune the 335 to 500 HP and still won't be close to M3.
Besides, the M car is a different beast in every way -- not a regular BMW, so it is always justified...

Yeah...go lick my ass for the $3000 slot...I can do better than that at my dealer...damn greedy, fool.
When the e92 335 was announced, everyone thought it'd be sold at MSRP, but now it's $1000 - $1500 below MSRP. Look the market for M3. It's $60K+ car and not many people can afford for daily driving. I just wait cuz I believe I can get it for $1k over the invoice at my dealer if I'll buy this car.

which dealer is selling the 335i for 1500 below MSRP? All the dealers i went to in southern california will only budge at most 500 off msrp for the 335. am i not negotiating hard enough?

e46 M3 even today sells at MSRP so don't fool yourself! Again, M3 is not a regular 3er.

If you want to buy an e46 M3 for $2k below MSRP? Let me know.

BTW, who pays $3000 for something which doesn't even exist? Eventhough a person have 1st spot on a waiting list, so what? The dealer will sell the car to payers whenever it hits the dealer. I remember a story about my friend who placed a deposit for a car but never saw it for almost 5 mo later because the dealer sold his car whenever there was better offers from customers. Whenever he called the dealer, they said this car was such as high demand...blah blah blah.

No they don't. Or the people who buy them suck ass at negotiating.

Just to get one thing straight, if the e92 m3 production date had really been announced and the OP was selling a production slot with a vin, I'd have no problem with him trying to profit. I myself wouldn't do it, but I don't have a problem with it.

What I have a problem with is that he's trying to sell you a turd in a box. There's no guarentee that your money is buying you anything but your name on a piece of paper.

Wait ... uh, if anybody wants my #1 spot on my dealer's waiting list for the new 4dr e90 M3 just paypal me $2500. Ebay here I come!
