As I'm probably going to switch over to a M4 what's the score with putting the car back on its original plates? Do I need to visit the DVLA and what about the road fund bit?

But don't leave it until last minute as it takes about a week and a half (in my experience) to get the V5 back from the DVLA - and they say can take up to 6 weeks.

Nope. Road fund licence is not transferred. New buyer needs to buy RFL before they drive the vehicle away. Seller gets balance of full months tax refunded.
