Being aware, I may be opening a can of warms here… I see the topic of Waze coming up in this thread. Myself, I like the OEM navigation and maps, and rely on them quite a bit. Really, I only use CarPlay to play music from my tidal app…

Do, the question is: in which circumstances or for which use cases are aftermarket maps/navigation apps superior to OEM (for simplicity, let’s bundle them up and consider Waze/google maps/apple maps as one thing… unless you wish to differentiate, then go ahead)?

Agreed about the wireless charger, it's get so hot it shuts my phone down (probably my biggest flaw with the car). However, a phone can be charged without mounting it. I've simply plugged it in with the cable and placed it in the opening next to the wireless charge. I suppose one could also place something over the wireless charge pad and place a plugged in phone there. Curios though, outside of deliver and uber apps, what apps aren't available that folks need to have a mounted phone and how often do you need those apps while driving?

Google Maps has given me better route choices than OEM Navi, especially when avoiding heavy traffic areas, though i wished it displayed on the HUD even though i'm a CarPlay user. plus, i don't find the vehicle's anticipatory hybrid driving significantly improves efficiency or the overall driving experience while using OEM Navi

i'm in the medical field and field messages about patients frequently. ofttimes i need to look at images related to their health. my work's messaging system isn't supported in the CarPlay GUI. further, when i get to work, our facility's locked gate is tied to facial recognition via the app's secure system, so i can't unlock the gate if my phone is in the console

my son's in track, and there's constant info from the coaches and between parents. the app we use isn't supported in the CarPlay GUI.

numerous foody apps aren't supported either. ordering via mobile is convenient and makes for efficient pick ups so we get to our destination quicker.

i honestly believe "using CarPlay" isn't necessarily safer either as some may insinuate, especially if interfacing with the GUI on the control display. CarPlay is safest when interacting with supported apps verbally. if you're having to use your fingers on the screen or use the iDrive controller to navigate within apps, how is that any different than using a mounted phone?

**note that i do all the above mostly when i'm at a stop, not while driving.

Thanks. Back to a vent mounted option it would be then. It looks like they have at least redesigned it for the new X3 and now it's out in the open, similar I think to how it is on a Tesla from what I've seen so maybe it should work better.

I think Waze is superior to the OEM GPS in pretty much every instance. I'm Android so I get notifications from it in the HUD unlike carplay which doesn't. There is part of me that wants to use Google maps but you can't beat the crowdsourcing info of Waze and overall Android auto and carplay both just look so much more attractive than the stock system.

Although, and I'm slightly assuming here, if the cop is sitting stationary a speed trap may pop up on his waze, but I don't know if you can delete it unless the app senses that you are moving towards it? 🤷‍♂️

That is correct and also no single user can delete a speed trap, it needs to have multiple reports of an item not being present or no reports of it being there for a certain period of time.

Ummm, I'd be a little terrified running into you on the road. It sounds like what you really need is a full time driver and you can hold your phone while getting track & field updates.

Back on the phone mount topic here's what I'm using in my x3. It's fairly innocuous magsafe. Not sure how it would work on the vent system on Idrive 8+. It's fairly small with a great magnet and no wobble, nice and stable

I agree - I have had no issues with the OEM nav and maps and love being able to send the destination to the BMW app and also the timely pop up of calendar destinations on the screen.

I don’t need it for the apps. I just love jumping in and slapping it on the magnetic charger which is easy to access. I usually have my sunglasses in the charging pad spot

hehe as I mentioned, I interact with the phone while stopped, not while driving. I’m safety conscious as that’s my job as the driver: protecting myself and passengers (and my car). I’m a firm believer in no texting while driving and live in a state with a hands-free law.

FWIW my last moving citation was 15 years ago (construction zone hidden speed camera). my driving record is spotless

you mean from the MyBMW app to the vehicle?

the version 4.5.0 app update allows sending a destination address from third-party apps to the bimmer. I don’t know if this is supported in iDrive 8/8.5 only. hopefully iDrive 7 is supported. I haven’t tested it yet

EDIT: in iDrive 7, it looks like we can! (screenshot below). the command is there for both Google Maps and Apple Maps, but I still need to see if my vehicle actually received the address. if it does, I suspect it’ll input to the OEM Navi, though

Lol. I did see your disclaimer and figured you careful. Your description of your phone activities gave me a momentary visual of a one-man marching band trying to drive a car at the same time.

it really isn’t a constant juggle, but enough where leaving my phone in the console or in my bag or in my pocket just don’t work for my needs

Yes from the BMW app to vehicle - with idrive 8.5

CONFIRMED: destination address can be sent to the bimmer via third-party Navi apps. I tested Google Maps and Apple Maps. a pop-up will show upon starting the vehicle asking to “Add as Destination?”, BUT it input it in the OEM Navi, not in the third-party app from which it was sent
