I actually like to think of it as engine output since it is sort of consistent across model refreshes. The F30 335i had 300hp, and this new 235i has 300hp as well.

The engine naming is not exactly internally consistent. The 2020 750i has the T3 variant though it is marketed as a 750i rather than an M750i, since there is a M760i occupying the M-Performance slot in the 7 Series line up.

I gave up trying to make sense of the model numbers equating to some sort of useful information years ago.

The only thing BMW needs us to know is that bigger numbers are better

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the trunk/tail light dilemma going on here. the lights are way too long for such a compact car and it's not a good look. They should end where the badges start. and the trunk just looks oversized for the car..

I'm not sure if your post is a bigger insult to BMW or this vehicle's future owners. When you insinuate that people will only purchase because of the brand, it's an tacit acknowledgement that you don't find any value in BMW's products. Otherwise you'd be able to identify how this vehicle is superior to its competition. Surely you agree this is a better car than a Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, etc.; no?

But he's right, a good portion of buyers of luxury cars (especially lowered price models) do buy them because of the badge and how it is perceived.

I don't see any Honda Civics in music videos, but S-Classes and 7-Series they're seen as cool and impressive and they can make you look rich even when you can't afford the payments.

Why buy a reliable Accord or Camry when you could have a 5 year old S-Class with tons of problems!

Its all about brand image, and the Germans have some of the highest brand cachet.

Also, you're comparing this to mainstream brands, but what mainstream brand is offering a subcompact sedan for over $30-50k? Sure a Camry can go towards $40k but its a different class in size and type.

My point is that that is ultimately a less precise way to look at it since two very different engines can make approximately the same power (since you use approximate output figures) while two different engines will not have the exact same name. Using the engine name also conveys more information - displacement, cylinder count, and technical revision.

But, yes, as long as no B48 makes more power than any B58, and no B58 makes more power than any N68 (set to replace the N63 next decade), thinking of it solely form the perspective of power output will work too.

True indeed.

So we can add a rule stating that the M will be omitted from the model name if there is already a higher-trim M Performance model in the lineup.

You give up too easily. Although things certainly get more complicated when you throw in all models sold across the world (which includes diesels), hybrids, and soon, pure-electric models, there is a method to the madness.

There is an ass for every seat.

Once BMW makes it a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or better yet 100% Electric (BEV) it will absolutely sell like hot cakes.

Reminds me of a Dodge Neon/SRT 4.

Interior is pretty nice considering it's a 2 series. With that said, why is this car even a model? It's not necessary. There's so much overlap between this car and other models that BMW has. I just don't get it.

This model adds to the over 170 different car models BMW has produced. What's more; those are just the models listed on Autotrader that you can search for so it could be missing a few models. 66 of those 170+ models are 2, 3, and 4 series (not including the M3 & M4) which is the same market this car will be marketed to.

The design language of those two cars are completely different.

Besides being 4 doors, not even close.

So much potential but honestly for the same price and performance, I'd feel happier in the new clubman jcw.
Ridicule you may, but reports on it so far have been pretty damn good.

THey actually got the grill right! Nice looking car. I wish this had come out 2 or 3 years ago. So I could buy, or at least compare, this to an S3.

a proper replacement to the e46xi i use to have. my only wish would be that it were a liftback. Seats look great, proportions are ok and 300hp to all four wheels is plenty with good gas mileage to boot. US models won't have the M fender badges, I assume.

Also why the 235i designation? I thought they moved to the 240i?

And the xDrive badge now goes back on the trunk?
