For the U.S. members:
I just ordered 8 quarts of Castrol TWS 10w60 oil from Tischer BMW, www.getbmwparts.com for $9.75/quart. That is an excellent price! I purchased 1 quart from my local BMW dealership last week for almost $23.00! Also, they wouldn't fill the car with oil for free as some have mentioned. I got into a huge argument with the service manager about this.

is it a good idea to keep a quart in the car??
also, is this a standard oil that can be found at auto parts store anywhere?

They do not top you off for gratis. Like I said earlier, I got into into a huge argument with the service manager about this. He had the fucking audacity to tell me I could afford to pay for my own oil if I could afford an M3, I am not exaggerating. I told him that I expect a certain level of service that comes with an M purchase and that his dealership is the only one that I know of that denies oil to M owners. The argument escalated from there and he ended up giving me the oil for free that day and said I'm an angry person. I told him to fuck off. Oh, and months ago they charged me $250 for an oil change. Even though the location is convenient for me, I will never go back there!! Quote:

Yes. Get the BMW oil bag to hold a liter and keep it in the trunk along with a funnel, gloves and some handi-wipes.
No. Only BMW dealers carry it. I've heard Porsche dealers this type of oil for cheaper than BMW dealers, but I've never checked it out.

Carrying oil
I don't see the point of carrying it if you check your oil every week or so. You should be able to keep it topped off at home. It's not going to go down suddenly unless you punch a hole in your pan or oil radiator.

Ok. But I like having a quart or liter with me just in case. I generally check my oil when I fill up at the gas station. If I need it then it is real handy to have some with you.

Although, with no dipstick (thanks, BMW) you need to do it when the engine is running, and it takes quite a while to get a reading,

Methinks the decision to do away with the dipstick was made by marketing, not engineering.
