M550 Resonator Delete - Afterthoughts
I know this subject has been discussed many times, but just had it done and couldn't be happier. Highly recommend for those on the fence. Massive farts on upshifts, pops and bangs that echo off walls on downshifts above 3k rpm. Quiet in comfort mode. This is how the exhaust should have come. Really no need for an aftermarket exhaust now. No need for a burble tune. 150 bucks well spent.

I did an x-pipe and couldn't be happier. All of the good things you said and stealth when you want it. Best money i've ever spent.

Question, I am new to exhaust modifications. Is this the same thing as what you guys did? Just a lot cheaper? Is the Dinan X pipe basically a resonator delete?

The Dinan X-pipe is essentially a resonator delete. I have that as well as the Dinan Exhaust with black tips on backorder - both due end of May. I also ordered the Dinan wireless remote switch to adjust the exhaust flaps, regardless of driving mode.
I'll let you know how it al goes when done by dealer- hopefully soon,

On stock midpipe it happens on both resonators. It is supposed to better manage backpressure and drone, not sure what the difference is in real life though, but that would still be my preference.

In reality, I am not going to do any exhaust work. I am coming from a Maserati, and although the louder exhaust and pops where cool for a while, it gets old. I'm fine with the default Sport Plus sound of the M550.
BUT, I do like the idea of double round tips on the existing system. Can these be swapped out or is it all one piece? i.e. can I buy the Dinan double black chrome and have them installed?

I can’t find the video now, but someone did resonator and muffler delete and said it was stupidly loud and droned like hell inside and they were putting the muffler back on.

I'm having a custom X made up next week. I'm seeing a range of opinion online (and not much data) on HP gains with the X. For a 600hp turbo V8 (with a JB4) I'm led to believe it could be worth 8-10 at the wheels?

Not so sure. Dinan quotes no gain for the x pipe (res delete) and 8HP for the axle back exhaust.

My X pipe is the same format as the Akra item here (but a sh1t load cheaper as its not Ti) https://www.akrapovic.com/en/car/pro...00&yearId=5918
They measured +10 horse power on the M5. The M550i puts out 20% less than the M5 so 8bhp for an X pipe is actually correct using quick maths... What you can actually feel is the 18lbs of torque around 3000rpm. I don't think you would get this bump with two straight pipes or slip on rear muffler. |

Just adding my 2 cents worth here. The purpose of a crossover or x pipe is to help scavenge the exhaust pulses from one cylinder bank to the other. To maximize gains, the crossover should be at a specific distance from the engine to realize max power.

Any issue with drone at freeway speeds?

No, a X-pipe will not throw a CEL nor will an axle back. Down pipe modifications throw CEL's, especially CAT-less.
