Genesis GV80 Revealed: New Competitor to the X5

Looks pretty good both inside and out and looks like Genesis has finally gotten their own switchgear and design language that isn't shared with parent company's Hyundai cars. Now if they can get some separate dealerships, they might have a better time selling cars.

What do you guys think?

Love the interior. Not sure about exterior till I see one in person. Thanks for posting!

But isn't this a mechanical twin of the Hyundai Palisade?

They use Genesis' RWD platform. The Telluride/Palisade twins are FWD based. I believe the Kia Stinger is the only non Genesis vehicle to use the RWD platform.

That would be in line with all the other mainstream/luxury marquees - wouldn't it?

Think Highlander/RX350, Pilot/MDX, Tahoe/Escalade, so on and so forth. I don't think that is a problem so long as quality, NVH, and feature content is appropriately distinguished.

This is an entirely different platform. The GV80's RWD platform will be what the next gen G80 uses. Same with the GV70 and G70.

Same concept as the Giulia to Stelvio.

I'm hoping the GV70 is as good as the G70 since I get a substantial discount and the wife is bored with her RX.

From what it looks like the GV70 will be the next model out although the proportions look a bit weird towards the back. Looks very small too although I guess we'll see when its revealed.

Exterior looks reminiscent of the Bentayga. Looks more expensive than it is.

Interior looks nice from a materials standpoint, but the design is typical Genesis: boring. When you look at a Merc, BMW, or Audi interior you can tell which company it came from. Genesis interior designs are yawn inducing.

Makes sense being that Genesis poached the designer of the Bentayga

While the interior doesn't really stand out in originality, I will say the cabin looks to be made out of high quality materials, especially after sitting in a G70 which I think has some really nice materials, and they finally have their own switchgear too, and I will say, this is much better than any of the Japanese luxury interiors from Lexus, Acura or Infiniti in my opinion.

It really is bad. The new Golf Mk8 back is similarly challenged.

looks nice. I saw Kia Telluride on the road and they do look 'expensive' for what they are. just not sure how long it will be before you start seeing wear on the seat, steering wheel, paint and clearcoat peeling off (like the Kia Stinger had).

I had a 2015 Hyundai Genesis that I traded in for my 2020 330i. From a tech standpoint, that car outshines anything with iDrive 7. And after watching the video below, I kind of want to move back to Genesis even more now. I can't think of any tech BMW has right now that Genesis doesn't have or won't have once the GV80 is out.

I find it funny when people talk about it “looking” like nice materials have been used based on photos.

You can’t tell anything about the quality of the materials and feel from photos.

From what I have seen for MSRP, the GV80 seems to be slotting into the MDX/RX350/Nautilus/Aviator/XT6 price range, and notably lower than the X5 and GLE.

Hyundai/Genesis need to offer more engine options. V8 would be nice.

You can get the 5.0L Tau V8 in the G90 and used to be able to get it in the G80 until this year. Genesis is probably trying to phase out the V8 completely for emissions reasons, but I agree it would have been nice on the GV80.

This is the sexiest SUV I've seen to date! I left Genesis (had 2 in a row) in order to ditch the payments and grab a couple of cars cash.....1 of which is my E93 335i. I love them and will own another in the future, possibly this bad boy once my highschool Junior heads to college!

Genesis is reportedly turning the GV80 into a BMW X6-fighting fastback

https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/03/...stback-report/

Quote:
We could see it in 2021

Genesis will follow the path blazed by BMW and turn the GV80, its first SUV, into a high-riding fastback, according to a recent report. The model will land in the same arena as the X6, among other coupe-like SUVs.

South Korea's members-only GV80 Club obtained this morsel of information from anonymous Genesis insiders. Its informants sketched the outline of an SUV that looks a lot like the GV80 from the rocker panels to the belt line. Above that, it stands apart from its more utilitarian sibling with a steeper windshield and a sharper-sloping roof line. The transformation brings bigger wheels, too, but we don't know if the front end has been tweaked.

Much like the X6 is an evolution of the X5, the Genesis model will be closely related to the GV80 (pictured) under the sheetmetal. It'll be sportier and more expensive than the family hauler it's based on, so it might eschew the entry-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and hop straight to the turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6. If that's the case, all-wheel drive will come standard. If it gets a turbo four, rear-wheel drive might be the default configuration.

Genesis hasn't commented on the rumor, and it hasn't signaled its intention to jump into a segment dominated by the X6. Assuming the report is accurate, we'll start seeing the first test mules racking up miles by the end of 2021.

If it's indeed in the pipeline, the GV80 fastback — a name that certainly won't be retained for production — will compete against the aforementioned X6, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the Audi Q8, and, at the top end of the range, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Sales could start during the 2022 model year.
