Running Staggered Style 230’s with X Drive

Hey guys,

I’m getting a bit tired of my style 17’ style 188’s and was hoping to pick up a set of style 230’s to run on my 08 335Xi and I want to be sure that I’m not going to be destroying my transfer case. I’m pretty new to this concept so I could use a little guidance.

Style 188 specs:
17*8/ 17*8.5
BMW recommends 225/45 and 255/40

Style 230 specs:
19*8/ 19*9
BMW recommends 225/30 and 255/30

What would be a safe combination be for me with the X drive to ensure that I’m not changing my rolling diameter? Also please let me know if you know anyone looking to sell their set of 230’s.

Thank you for your help!

Bryan

You need to make sure that the rolling diameter between front and rear tires is within 1%

You should put 225 35 in the front and 255 30 in the back. I had them before changing to non-runflat 235 35 and 265 30 (on style 199 wheels 8 in front and 9 in the back). The rolling diameter will be less than 1%.

Go with 225/35/19 and 265/30/19. Those sizes will give the closest rolling diameter front to back.

Many people also run 235/35/19 and 265/30/19 without issues, but the rolling diameter will not be as close.

Just put in an offer for a set. Did anybody experience any loss of power, differences in shift patterns, or a really brutal ride from upgrading from a 17" to a 19" rim? I'm also hoping the offset on the 230's won't rub with my HR springs... any similar personal experiences would be appreciated.

I went from 17 run flats to 19 non-run flats and the ride was not any harsher. I would imagine going from a 17 non-run flat to a 19 non-run flat would be a bit harsher though.

No changes with power loss or shift patterns.

Yeah I don't have run flats on the 17's so I'm expecting it to be a bit rougher which should be alright. My main concern was the effect on the drivetrain though so that's comforting.
