I get what you are saying but I think it's almost the opposite in the case of the R8

because the v10 is so epic and dominates the experience, the manual itself is not as important as it would be a more mundane car (also I wasn't a huge fan of the gated transmission in the 3 I drove as compared to say a porsche manual)

on the other hand with a more pedestrian vehicle, a manual transmission is more important to give you an engaging experience.

just depends on where you live in regards to auto vs manual too. I would never want a manual daily if i lived in LA or downtown in a big city for instance. If traffic isn't a big deal where you are then you can daily a manual without too much drawback.

I’d compare the GT4 to the R8. By the time you option the GTS, the price is so close, they overlap. And the GT4 will hold value longer. If you want a sports car, get the GT4. If you want a very nice GT get the R8. But in my mind the Audi will never be a Porsche and the R8 is always considered the poor man’s Lamborghini despite arguably being better than the Lambo. I’m a Porsche guy so would get that.

I don't commute, so really I only drive 3-4 times a week and usually in off peak times, so the manual in traffic issue doesn't really rear its ugly head for me

the gts is a better fit for me in the one car scenario than the GT4

If I had never had a porsche before I would be leaning more the porsche way, it's that v10 that keeps calling my name

not a 2010-2012 v10 R8 gated as they are crazy expensive now, almost as much as the 2018 rws ...and it's the V10 I want!

I mean this respectfully, but OP, this is your 4th thread since February asking about different V10 R8s and comparing them to various Caymans or other cars. You must have come to some sort of conclusion by now. I feel like I'm reading almost the same thread every few weeks.

This is starting to look like a case of paralysis by analysis. Pick one or the other up and enjoy it before the opportunity passes you by. I don't think you can really go wrong with either one, and a forum is only so valuable in making a decision compared to your personal experience and your money on the line. 90% of the time going with your gut is the right decision, so put the 2 side by side, see which suits you better, and drive to your nearest dealership to figure out how to procure one that you like.

he's been spoiled by the porsche manual trans. I have too, i used to think my f80 manual was good until i bought a GT3.

1st gen R8 are nice. But for a manual V10 in nice spec you are getting close to a 2nd gen R8 pricing. The performance gap between the two cars is pretty big. I've driven a gallardo, 1st gen r8 v10 spyder, and huracan. If the new R8 is even 90% as capable as its huracan sibling its a big step up.

it's actually not the same question, the question has evolved, before it was gated v10's vs the GTS
I have moved on to 2nd gen R8 due to the rising cost of the gated manuals and my realization that i prefer newer cars

and I enjoy the process of exploring this with the other car nuts on here!

I just picked up a 2017 R8 Spyder, absolutely loving it.

Previously had a Cayman GTS (2.5 T4, APR tuned), and a 991.2 C4 GTS. I felt that both the Cayman and 911 offered more of an involved drive when it came to steering feedback and the immediacy of how they responded to changes... but then I rev the V10 out to 8700RPM and I forget about it. That's not to say that the R8 isn't capable, I took out to one of our local tracks the other week and it did absolutely great (brakes were a weak point eventually) but the EPS in the P-cars is next level.

It's a supercar, it gets attention - lots of attention... and I drove a Lava Orange 911. It's also IMMENSELY comfortable, 100% daily drivable. It really lives up to the everyday supercar stigma that it has.

I'd go for the R8 unless you can swing a 991.2 (not .1) GT3.

It's a base, but with every option added except for sports exhaust and carbon ceramics. I'm running a Capristo exhaust right now as I found the stock (non-sport) exhaust way too quiet. The Capristo is loud (in a screaming f1 type of way), but as quiet as stock with the valves closed. It has a very Jekyll and Hyde nature which I love.

Mag Ride, 20" wheels, B&O audio, CarPlay... everything I need. I've racked up 3000km in 4 weeks now because I just keep taking it out for aimless drives just hear the engine sing away. Test drive one and see what you think!

yup it's been difficult for me lately to find a car that I lust for (in my budget of course)

The last time I really had that feeling was after my test drive of a 2014 981S.

After that drive I just had to have one and the first six months with that car were awesome. I couldn't stop myself from driving it, always took the longer route, went for joy rides etc.

There is very little in the current new car market that checks all the boxes like that car did:

manual
right size (I don't like big cars and I can not lie)
naturally aspirated engine with decent low end torque
light weight
styling I like that doesn't attract too much attention (I prefer to fly under the radar)

The R8 is non-manual, too big and gets too much attention, but that V10!

but I wonder does it really make sense to buy a car just for the engine?

(that's pretty much what I would be doing with the R8)

went with the GTS 4.0

so in the end I went with the GTS 4.0

just got it so don't have a lot of impressions yet, but I do quite like it.

The 4.0 is actually a pretty special engine. It isn't quite as epic as the v10 in the R8 but it's no slouch, electric throttle response, torquey and a unique guttural howl (and this is all under 4000 rpm and 1/2 throttle at most).

It is amazing how much difference the bigger engine makes.

so far happy with the choice, the thing that drew me to the R8 was really that v10 and its exotic looks, but in all other respects the gts fits me better and the fact that the 4.0 itself a special engine is helping me to be good with the choice.

Plus I have realized I need a manual. If they made new R8's in manual, I would have likely got one of those for a really new experience and that v10!
