The 8AT shifts quickly. I think it's really nice, but haven't driven other BMWs.
My M-sport has shift paddles. Not sure what other trims come with that, but that could be harder to find. X1s are/were the least expensive BMW when brand new, and probably that carries over to used vehicles. Aside from that, hatchbacks are not that popular, which might impact the pricing. |

The ZF8HP is quite advanced order of unit.
It shifts fast in sport mode. The extra gear ratios allow it to stay on the power band well Vs the older 6hp. Mind you the 8speed is only available in the 28i. If you want 35i then it's 6hp. It's a bummer that they exclude the dct found in the the 1/335i. I believe the cheapest bimmer is the 320i.... At least in Canada |

There are no manual X1s in the US: sorry to disappoint...we wanted one too but settled on the more powerful 3L with a lot of options we found used.
The E84 is a bit of an odd duck: its very similar to the E91 yes but has 1 series and newer interiors when in 2.0T form, but uses the older ZF 6AT for in 3.0T form. My wife mostly daily's it while I have a E90 MSport diesel. Both of our cars are MSports with the optional paddles: I use them all the time personally. Given its price point (lowest entry), demo (more female then male) you are not going to find a ton of folk who have deeply modified the cars vs. the N54/55 E9x/F3x forums. I've simply maintained ours, slapped snow tires on it, and have a basic JB on there for a bit more power (looks like some OBD flashing may be around soon for it). The only option I despise is the servo-tronic steering: way to over assisted for my taste but again, the demo was not me - b |

Shift Speed
I have the 35i with the 6 speed. After I flashed the transmission software with the alpina mod, the shifts are lightning fast. Of course, this may also mean my transmission is going through more wear and tear.. I changed my trany fluid recently in order to ensure protection.

It's worth noting not all Msports have paddles, it was a stand-alone option. Unfortunately mine does not have them.

IIRC the paddles were advertised as standard on the MSport package, but the BMW configurator was messed up in that you still had to check a separate box for them (both non-paddle and paddle were no-cost). Many ticked off people, and rightly so.

Judging by the 1/2 worn tires at 5k miles (when I bought it) new rotors and pads all around at 5.2k miles when I brought it right back in after purchase for bad highway brake shudder...I'm 95% sure it was used for demo laps at a BMW school or similar. But for the price I paid w/CPO...and knowing that the motor is stout and the rest of the car is a known quantity EXX, I was fine with it. Unrelated: Haven't driven it in a few months until yesterday...when I had a couple highway runs (not a normal thing for me) showing a look-at-me aqua blue SRT8 Challenger its posterior. He was so very confused, and I remembered why I love this little thing so much. Perhaps it wouldn't have the sleeper appeal of the N55 X1 (or our N54 535 wagon...swoon), but why oh why couldn't BMW have given us a true 335 wagon or M135 hatch? So what you don't sell a lot...at least you keep some enthusiast followers/branding power. OK...rant over.

I'm looking to get the Alpina TCU flash, as well as some other coding done and have absolutely zero idea where to start. Thanks! |

Will type out some details tomorrow! Basically, the TCU trans flash and other coding can be done by you, or someone else, with a laptop and downloaded BMW software. As far as engine tunes on the n55, you can add a piggyback like a JB4 easily...takes about 30 mins to install once familiar. This leaves the factory tune in place, and essentially tricks the ecu (dme) into running more boost. But to reflash the stock ecu, it first needs to be physically removed from the car and mailed to a tuner to be " unlocked", or bench flashed. Once unlocked, one can flash the ECU via the OBDII port ( using their phone and an MHD app., for example) |

Looking to do the JB4 Stage 2 and the Alpina flash, so I don't need to worry about unlocking the ECU. Thanks! |
