Didn't like it? I thought you had plans to drive it?

We did plan to drive it. Interior felt low budget, trunk was smaller than we expected. It was on the showroom floor and would have been a big hassle to get out to drive so we passed, took a new 3 out instead. Much better for what we need.

Holy C**P! A hardly optioned 228xi GC is $40K!! My comparable e46 325i (with a straight 6) was $33k new.

In a couple years BMW will come out and say they won't make any more sport sedans since people don't buy them. What they're missing is that people don't want the BMW sport sedans that they're making because they have lost their attractiveness. Build a proper front engine rear drive 2 series sedan or grand coupe and that'll bring back some of the brand enthusiasts. Just like the M2 did. On the other hand it's probably too late. They need to bring a proper 4 wheel electric in a 2 series sedan form factor.

Just saw a "Fast Fact" in an email from BMWNA:

"The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe won the coveted title of Most Beautiful Car of the Year at the 35th Festival Automobile International in Paris".

What a huge letdown.

This car has an identity crisis! ... Worst looking BMW yet.

Cool little car for sure
I'm test driving one tomorrow for GF, will report back. Her car desires are nothing like mine - AWD, 4 doors, easy to use navigation / tech, safe and modern, warranty with no surprises, must be red. She couldn't care less about driving dynamics, steering feedback, FWD architecture, anything that would be a non-starter for me. Money isn't the main driver here everything else we are looking at is $10k more but the new 3-series is bigger than her F30 and there's not a ton out there around $50k that's all that interesting. It makes zero sense to step up to something like an S5 sportback or 440 GC for a driver like her, complete waste of money.
I mean, isn't paying BmW prices for a mini then a waste as well? Get her a nice mini and save $10k

Shame on BMW for sticking the fake 'M' badge on this.

I also can't unsee the hideous fwd engine placement. Such a snub nose and high hood showing off how high off the ground and how forward the engine is.

I will credit bmw that the Haldex they use is very good and you can't tell it's fwd based. But man it's ugly.

any more video reviews out there?

Curious if anyone is aware of any other video reviews that are worth watching? Way too many with AI voice overs of stock press photos, make sure to give a thumbs down to those shitty youtube videos.

Keep well and please keep sharing any reviews, blogs or posts regarding the M235i Gran Coupe if you see any.

Jason Cammisa's Instagram Review (not for the faint of heart).

Quote:
Verdict BMW 228i Gran Coupe: Brand suicide, perhaps. But you’d have to be braindead to spend $48,495 on this.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I don’t mean a little braindead. I mean on-life-support, no-cerebral-activity, unplug-me-if-I-ever-get-to-this-state braindead.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Not bc the 228i GC is terrible (it’s a terrible BMW but not a terrible car) but bc it’s not as good as cars costing half as much. Loaded Corolla & Mazda3 are better cars. Kia Forte drives WAY better. Jetta GLI humiliates this car (except lower door-panel material. VW’s is crap.)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Sideways B48 means mounts have to deal with full axle torque. BMW got the compromise wrong: poor NVH at low-rpm high-loads, then bucking/lash at overrun transition.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That’s the first FWD problem. 2nd is the understeer.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Holy SHIT the understeer.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
No BMW has ever had balance this bad, on-power or off. Other FWD/AWD cars, including Minis, do much better at the limit. Some (Evo, SH-AWD) are even great.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ride is unacceptably busy: a big shadow could knock your teeth out. Terrific body control, but there’s zero grip, so what’s the point?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
All-season Turanzas on an M-Sport-pack BMW?!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Dead steering is missing Mini’s on-center hyperactivity but also Mini Fun. Remember those 3 days when BMW’s tagline was “Joy?” Yeah, neither do they.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There’s a full second of throttle lag. Sometimes two. Then, turbo lag. 8-sp automatic does jerky WOT downshifts.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Big trunk but back seat doesn’t have enough headroom someone 5’10”.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Interior accent lighting is embarrassing.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Door-close is the cheapest, rattliest sound I’ve ever heard from a self-described premium car. That first impression alone told me this car should be half the price.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Everything else just confirmed it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I just read 2 old books about BMW being 'the most admired car company in the world.' 100% of it revolved around BMW’s compact sedan superiority. The team who put BMW badges on an SUV-based, ill-handling, no-fun, workaday FWD compact sedan should be (metaphorically) pelted with rocks and hardcover copies of those books until they, themselves, are braindead. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It can’t take long; they’re obviously already halfway there.⁣⁣

⁣⁣

Side profile is indeed a total disaster, a kink would be better but clearly not enough to avoid an instant throw up reflex. A pig with botox in the lips is still a pig and not a beauty queen.

I believe the 3 series is always the better car for everybody's needs! The 2GC is too expensive to have any relevance in the line-up.

I'am afraid I'am with the majority here: why the monstrous grille and why so much Lexus/Inifinity oriented?

Although BMW motivates their design a posteriori, by referring intensely to its extended heritage, they did everything to deny it. My main gripe is the grille, which feels like a provocation and looks like a huge middle finger sticked out to the world.
When I would own this vehicle, I would constantly feel obliged to motivate my buying decision inspite of it's provocative snout. With none of my 8 previous BMWs (e46/39/90/91/2 F10/11/G01) I ever felt the need to motivate why I bought it.

Wow, such hate. I understand why but I actually like the way the front end looks. The M235 I test drove was parked next to a 8 series coupe and the front end is actually much more similar than comparing a M235 to a M340, so I think that is a good thing for the M235. Coming from a Infiniti Q60RS I can say the M235 is almost just as much fun and just as quick. The new tech in the BMW M235 is better than that found in my Infiniti. I don't mind paying 50K for a fully loaded model. I have shortlisted the BMW M235 and I most likely am going to wait and buy one with 5K miles for 10K off the price.

As an exercise in value, a mini countryman S all4 (2017+), which is practically the same mechanically as the m235i GC is dirt cheap, and new is about 10k cheaper comparatively optioned (not based on MSRP, but actual price paid vs M235i GC)...... it doesnt add up for BMW, they priced themselves out of that segment.

Compared to rival offerings in the same category, they all have things that bring them above the 2 series, for example the MB A35 AMG, the interior is just fantastic, great performance and you're not sitting 20 feet above the ground.... Cadillac CT4V, RWD LSD standard and can be bought new for 40k or less (MSRP is 45k, but no one pays that ever) with the awesome handling of the alpha platform.... thats just two options right there that are already heads and shoulders dynamically and aesthetically above the m235i GC.... BMW better start slashing prices or incentivize heavily, otherwise I see them sitting on lots for a while.
