BMW 3 Series GT Trunkline Revealed and More Looks at Retractable Spoiler
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW 3 Series GT Trunkline Revealed and More Looks at Retractable Spoiler Development continues on the upcoming F34 3 Series GT (Gran Turismo) model, which BMW is testing concurrently with the other future F3x variants - the F32 coupe, F31 touring. We've now spied the GT model with its trunk/tailgate open, revealing its exact trunk line. These photos also confirm what we've said earlier - that the 3 series GT will feature a simple hatch function rather than the twin trunk arrangement on the 5er GT. We also get some more looks at the F34's retractable spoiler, the first on a production BMW. As seen in the older photos we've reposted below, when the spoiler is deployed, we can see the trunk cutout for it to slot into when retracted, for a flat subtle look. Expect this spoiler spoiler to deploy at higher speeds to increase downforce. The overall apperance of the 3 series GT will follow the 5 series GT in having some independent styling from the other 3 series variants. Expect the 3 Series Gran Turismo to debut sometime in 2013 and in both gasoline and diesel models. Follow all our spy photos @ http://www.bimmerpost.com/spyshots/ |

I kind of wonder how much downforce the spoiler would really create.. it just doesn't look that big to generate a lot of downforce :S
Anyways, cool pics! I don't like it, though, I'm starting to like the 3GT :/

I was expecting something along the 6-series Gran Coupe lines and I am presented something resembling the fugly 5-series GT.

I'm a little nervous about all this... One thing is - if you wanted this car, why not buy a sedan?

They (the spoilers) are not there for sporting reasons, but rather to keep the car stable at hi-speed... .... enough downforce to keep the car rear end remain on the ground (avoiding rear wheel lift off/ loss of traction) and it's NOT the kind of downforce to stick the car to the road even for it to drive upside down...

it's only a 3 series... it's not crazy fast like the Veyron...
so my guess is: No!

I wouldn't put my hopes in this spoiler acting as an airbrake. Not even the 996 C4's moving spoiler acted as an air brake.

Saw one of these prototypes today around 2:30pm on State St here in Santa Barbara.
Looked pretty tall.

These types of spoilers work by interrupting the flow of air along the top of the back window that would then flow downwards in a vortex towards the back/underside of the car which would create an uplift under the back wheels. By deflecting the air upwards, the downward vortex will not interact with the back of the car, thus it will not cause uplift, thus the backend of the car will be firmly planted at highway speeds.
It's not a 'wing' that generates low pressure on the lower side as its main purpose. (e.g. the inverse of what airplane wings do) That is why it's probably more correct to call it a spoiler...it spoils the uplifting affects of the high speed air coming down the back window that would create low pressure under the car. If I'm not mistaken....! |
