BMW is a different company today and we have to accept that. They build fine vehicles but for those that may be traditonal hard core car lovers they may not fill the need anymore, which is fine, they are a successful business at what they do but perhaps our needs have changed...i know mine have and as I move towards the desire for a true sportscar I accept that bmw doesnt produce such vehicles, so I decided to go with bmw for my daily drive needs and for my fun sports car Im moving on to, well, im sure you can guess where the progression takes one who still appreciates german engineering

I assume that the UKL platform is being used for the 2 Series Grand Coupe, Active Tourer, and Grand Tourer since those benefit more from comfort and space. M Performance models get the "M35i" moniker and use the 300hp B48.
However, for the next 2 Series Coupe, BMW will use the CLAR platform. Most importantly, no more handicapped B58 M2 like the first generation. The M Performance M240i will use the B58 while the M2 will use the S58. Is this correct?

That's mostly correct, yes.
All vehicles in the 1 and 2 product families (including SAVs) will be built on the UKL (now called FAAR) architecture which supports only three and four cylinder engines, including PHEVs. Of course, pure electric vehicles are also now possible on the latest version of this platform (FAAR-WE), and BMW-branded examples should start arriving next decade (the first EV on this platform will be MINI-branded and it is set to go on sale this year). The 2 Series Coupe and M2 will be indeed be the lone "sub-3" CLAR products. However, rumor currently suggests the M Performance model may switch from the B58 to a longitudinal version of the high output B48, and if this happens, it might return to the M235i badge. The M2, on the other hand, will stick with an I6, but we don't know yet if that will be the S58 or if they will go back to the B58 for the lower end model(s), reserving the S58 for the C and above or even just the CS and CSL models. |

Only if they tune the and version like Audi did with the R8. Even then it would be heavy and not as playful as the small sedans of old. Perhaps Mazda will step in based on the Miata platform.

Both the 228i and the M235i should be available from the launch of the vehicle. |

I'd rather get the new Mazda 3 than this overpriced FWD car.

Or Audi. The A3 has sold between 18k-36k the last 5 years. CLA has been between 20k-30k. Combined CLA/A3 sales very nearly equal 3er sales, so BMW will be challenged to get high volume sales from the 2GC without just cannibalizing the 3er.

Although that's precisely the kind of thinking that caused BMW to NOT not sell a compact sedan in the US , and has eventually led them to lose overall market share in the small to medium size premium luxury segment. BMW was so afraid of " cannibalizing their own sales " they let their two main competitors beat them at their own game by producing smaller compact sedans while BMW NA trotted out a 1er and 2er in coupe form only. BMWs irrational fear of cannibalizing sales extends back to when when they refused to build an E46 M3 Sedan ( after wildly successful E36 M3/4 sales ). because they were so concerned that they would lose M5 sales. |
