To my eye, the 2AT and 2GT MPVs are really the only odd ducks. The other form factors are consistent with the 4 Series, prior generation 6 Series, and 8 Series. And, if you think of the MPVs as stand-ins for a would-be 2GT in the vein of the 6GT and now-canceled G24 4GT, they become perhaps a bit less "left field".

It's true that the 2 Series is also unique in that it spans two platforms, but most enthusiasts would agree that's a good thing since it means we get a small RWD coupe.

Would it be even better if all 1 Series and 2 Series products were on a single RWD platform? Sure, but as I believe you mentioned in a post above, they were at a disadvantage to competitors with less interior space to work with, so something had to give. I'll add that the RWD entry-level lineup also put them at a manufacturing cost disadvantage.

The good news is that all this should change in a decade (or so). A future BMW dedicated EV platform for small vehicles along the lines of VW's MEB will no doubt be RWD-first as any pure electric architecture should rightly be. While pure-RWD performance vehicles may not be plentiful due to the fact that they'd be leaving an entire second (or third, or third and fourth) motor's worth of power on the table, at least RWD-biased AWD will be readily available, and will no doubt be the norm for products with high performance aspirations. Finally, the M2 Gran Coupe and Minivan that we all want so bad will be possible. Well, maybe not so much the latter.

It would still just sit better with me if the transverse motors were all labeled MINI, or Morris, or just not BMW.

And I followed a 6GT earlier this week. I don't care how nice the inside is, that's possibly the dumbest way to spend that kind of money.

Although I don’t like the FWD BMW motif, I do want BMW to make a car that’s similar in size to e46. Lack of manual is a downer too as in what has my favorite car mfg think I did to deserve this punishment.

That said, let me speak from the BMW spiked water cooler for a second. have you driven a f39 M35? It is an awesome drive and ride. Dare I say it f44 gc x M35 DCT will blow every e46 323-M3 clean off the road and then some. Ride better, handle better, 8 gears, sound meh, great fuel economy, low lease payment and under warranty.

It might be categorized “don’t knock it, till you try it “ it might have Joy of driving and you don’t know it. Yet...

This could replace my F30 when my lease is up. Will need to drive it to see if FWD feels acceptable.

😁 +1, the M35i is no joke and would do wonders in a car the size of our beloved e46.

Some day, those that are honest and step back and realize that theyve been fooled because of the series numbering. There is no 3er anymore, and the only hope of a 3er in the classical model is for a rwd 2er to be offered.
We’ve finally gotten to the point where the g20 is as large as the e39! And yet most still think its a 3er! The car has grown so large that regardless of the power added ot can never be as fun as what a 3er always was. They are big cars now and bmw needs a small sports sedan so Im hoping the 2er takes the mantle and reclaims some of the fun of the e30 thru e46 models

There are some hopes, if this become real.... Maybe some adjustments in the front end, remove the X2 feeling, and we can start smiling. PS! I loved my first BMW, a 85' 323i E30.

Mercedes does. On many of their cars, including the really expensive ones.

To each their own. While I prefer the cleaner look of hoodline integrated with the top of the grill, it wouldn't be important enough to me to become a decision making factor in my purchase.

Yes. Mercedes also does it, but in a more ‘rounded way’ following the contour of the front, which also looks wrong, but at least it’s a little bit better than the straight in-the-middle-of-nowhere BMW’s one. BTW, I also consider Mercedes’ one as lazy design (if Audi can comply with pedestrian regulations placing the hood line correctly, the others should also do)

I don't understand the concept of these grand coupe.... you make a compact two door, the 2 series, and now you want to make them bigger? If I wanted something bigger, I would go for the 3 series instead...
kinda like the 4 series grand coupe, I hardly see them on the road :

No...you're missing the point.

People are interested in a smaller 4 door car (myself included) - you get some of the practicality of the bigger models, but not all of the unwanted size. Plus the GC styling is nicer for some vs. the traditional boxiness of the 3er, 5er, etc.

My F80 could be perfect if it were smaller...but this is a FWD based travesty, so no real interest from me. Just pointing out the potential benefit.

Surprised you don't see them, my understanding is the 4GC is the best selling version of the 4-Series, outselling the coupe and convertible combined. Same with the 6-Series before it, and my guess is the same will follow suit with the 8-Series. Maybe they just blend in and you're not noticing them?

A 2 series can be:

A weird Minivan sort of thing 2AT
A fwd sedan with a hatch, that they call a coupe 2GC
An actual coupe that's rwd and can even be an M car 230i, M240i and M2C

The 2er minivan is the worst car they've ever made...to your point, how in the hell that can share any designation with the best cars they've put out in a long time (M2/M2C) makes no effing sense.

It's an abomination...something for the badge whores I suppose.

If I lived somewhere I could buy one, I'd totally rock a 2AT and throw an M2CS badge on it. Maybe add an AMG sticker on the other side.

I concur. Seems like red mist.. probably a good thing he doesn't see all of them.. lol

BMW sells way more sedans than coupes... except for the E82 1 series and /F87 2 series... where there is no sedan.

Of course.. now that a 2 series Gran coupe is coming.. and it's being built in MX for North America... a plant that should have no issues with plant capacity like they had at Leizpig.... the 2 series gran coupe will be their top selling 2 er... (we shall see if the 2 series coupe actually carries on in the next generation after F87 EOP 06/22)
