There are so many quality pistols that would fill the need, Beretta, Glock and Sig Sauer to name a few. I own a G17.5 and Beretta APX Centurion and enjoy shooting both.

I also agree with leaving one chambered. If I'm armed, then I need to be ready to shoot someone if I deem it necessary. I can yell, or try to deescalate verbally if the situation warrants, but in general I don't want to be trying to use weapon noises to scare someone. I don't want to be in a position where I can't shoot if I need to, and I don't want to be in a position where I have to announce my location before shooting.
The Benelli M4 is the greatest weapon ever designed for us peons. Nobody is changing my mind.

I'll meet you with my lowly .308, we'll pace off 150 yards each way in opposite directions, and we each fire once at the other. "after the sound of the gat" you tell me if you've changed your mind.

There's a sticky on r/tacticalgear that goes beyond firearms, but I think it's worth sharing here..

Not one-hand friendly
Ammo choice is very important

Now, most/all of those issues can be overcome with training, but I think a handgun or short AR is better for most people.

You've obviously considered the limitations and worked around them, so the shotgun is a good choice for you. Some people don't take the time to condsider what is best, only what is easiest/quickest/cheapest. And I can't stand the Joe Biden type advice of, "just get a shotgun and you'll scare off the bad guy when you rack the slide."

Different tools for different jobs. The M4 is an amazing piece of hardware though

No argument here. FWIW I also keep a nice handgun with light in my bedside table. I just like having options. Short ARs are very nice, like I said, a suppressed .300 blk is one of my favorite types of rifles, and I do debate moving one to the bedroom, but so far the M4 has stayed

It really does come down to thinking it through and training training training

I own an M4, and a HK91... I don't want to get hit by anything coming out of either one of them.

They each have their own purpose, and an M4 (especially the 14 inch version) is an excellent home defense weapon.

And if you really want to play that distance game.... you use your .308 and I'll use my M82A1. And to make it comparable to your post, let's move out to 1,000 yards.

That is key.

It's the chef, not the knife. The driver, not the car. The Indian, not the bow.

You don't need to convince me! I love my .308s!!!

My "Hebrew Hammer" .308 IWI ACE is a boom cannon hah. The dirty looks this thing gets at the range from folks with inadequate ear protection!

Red face

All this shotgun talk...

Picked up 250 rds of 00 from Lucky Gunner. I could use more straight-up 12-ball Buckshot. Most stuff I have is fancier wadded buckshot, 3-gun/competition buckshot, or slugs.

Yes, but *I* never said the .308 was the greatest weapon ever....

I would love to shoot the M82. Would absolutely love it. Now, however, thanks to the jerkoff that we have as a Prime Minister, all 50's are banned and prohibited firearms. That's what we get for electing a snowboard instructor to be leader of our country. Though in fairness, I and many others were opposed to him right from the start and voted for the other guy.

Ha ha, nice! Yeah, that muzzle brake on the end definitely would add to the report for sure. I have one at the end of the Remington 700 and she's loud. Gets the odd look or two at the range even from people wearing ears.

Big bore guns can be fun to shoot. I really want a 20mm or 25mm but they would be ridiculous money to shoot.

Always! I'm lucky in that I moved this Spring and now my range is outside my house. This morning my fiancé suggested we run 1R1 handgun drills, so that's what we did before breakfast! Love it!

I have a 30 min drive to the range, it's nice through the country but a bit of a pain. My wife and I have been talking about moving out to a small farm/wooded area with a barn and the ability to shoot at home.

Yeah before moving I had a 30 minute drive to the range (plus waiting for a lane). I have to say I am really loving living out in the country for a long list of reasons. I miss the city much less than expected. Although my M5 wishes the road to my house was paved

Yeah my next house I want to be far away from others and the "far" will be defined by if I can just walk out my back door and blast away without a neighbor hearing me. (of course with a safe set up, dirt pile, etc.)
