320D xDrive MPG
All,
I went for a 320D mainly for economy...though after picking up and doing approx 800 miles, average speed just under 40mph I'm returning an MPG of 40.2. Does this seem right? Mixture of driving here, motorway and around town. I'm also concerned that I seem to be returning high 30's when cruising on the motorway at around 80ish...is this right?? Please someone tell me it will loosen up and improve with time otherwise I should have just gone for a 33xD Thanks in advance

Good news - it will loosen up and the potential economy will improve.
Bad new - it will loosen up, become more fun and spend more time at the redline - reducing economy. Enjoy the car.

Well, when I just handed over my E92 320d LCI (same engine) I had done 42 mpg over the past 500 miles. I usually got 50+ however.
It depends on how you drive it!

It's ever so slightly better than what I've got from our new 335dX, so it's certainly cheered me up a little! Not much help to you though I suppose. Sorry!
Highland Pete has been saying for a while though that the real-world xdrive fuel economy penalty of sdrive is much bigger than the official figure would suggest. |

Sounds about right. I get about 44-45mpg out of my rwd 320d, but 50 on a long journey.

I have a 320dx Auto (2300m) and just got 47mpg motorway at 70 with 2 adults & 2 children and 4 hand luggage cases however, I do only do short journeys ( 4-5 miles ) around town daily and only get about 36 average.

I've got a an F31 320D M Sport s drive and the computer is showing 38 mpg as an average mpg. I don't do much motorway driving but when I do it goes up to mid to late 40's.
I have a heavy right foot if that helps......

I don't want to wade into the sDrive/xDrive, I don't know enough..but from what some have said on here the reported difference (I think its about 5mpg) seems roughly right - but so much is down to individual driving styles. I'd be interested to follow the debate, for when it comes to changing again. Guys thanks for all your help some reassurance, and to the guys with the big engines...glad to perked up your Sunday evening!!!

Have a look at a recent thread on here titled 335 mpg (or similar). Lots of discussion of mpg figures for different engined 3 series. I know my average increased by 1mpg per 1000 miles for the first 4000 miles of the engine.
A big factor is length of journey. Mpg shoots up once the engine is fully warmed up. |

Same engine apart from an extra discrete small turbo and possibly different engine mapping so I imagine unless you push the higher performance of the 35d engine the figures should be pretty similar.

I have an uphill drive every day and the difference between going up and coming back down can be 15-20mpg on the trip computer!

I've been delving into the reasons why the NEDC mpg figures may be giving the impression xDrive is not much different on paper than sDrive. Appears the road load calculations are very optimistic across the tests for EURO 5/6 compliancy. Independent tests are finding figures used are way out, with an average of about 11% lower than what are used in the NEDC tests, some road load figures can be over 30% optimistic. So a lot will depend on what the xDrive road load figures are in the tests, how they have been "adjusted" compared to sDrive. We've no idea if they have the same ratio of error. Plus we are likely seeing the "small engine vs. big engine" factor. As an example, many F10 users report the 530d returning mpg averages very close to the 520d, when cruising fast motorway speeds. Again it is a case of the road load being very similar at speed. Add in the subtle factors like gearing, boost variation, BSFC for load/rpm, (smaller engines can suffer more) from the two engines for the "absorbed power", we result in similar mpg. HighlandPete |

Well I'm in a brand new loan 320i xDrive with 28 miles on the clock this week whilst they fix my 335d. Added another 50 to it this morning pottering about very lightly (not going above 3.5k as it's new and not my car). Can't get it above 28mpg

So what's up with your 335d? Shocking fuel consumption by the way, I bet you'll be glad to get the 335d back.

335d's got a vibration coming from n/s/f from about 60mph upwards. I thought it was a bit of trim loose on underside. Went out with foreman and he could feel as well as hear it. Quick check revealed nothing but they found a service recall for 335d for some trim by the turbos in the engine bay which can vibrate so it could be that - will be done as matter of course. Next time yours goes in, I'd mention the recall if they don't know about it. So they've lent me a 320i xDrive Touring until they've sorted it. Has been interesting in realising just how much my toys just complete my car and just how spoilt I am with both my spec and the powertrain! So used to comfort access now, spent the morning looking like an complete idiot trying to touch and open door only to realise I need to press the key!! Amazing how things become complete habit. Standard seats have no lat support - much prefer sports seats. Not sure what leather they cover the standard steering wheel in but it's horrible compared to M Sport wheel. To be fair, I can't knock the car as it's fundamentally a nice one (although I can't understand why anyone would chose the 320i over the 320d). Has just made me realise just how lucky I am with my spec and appreciate my car all the more. Also made me once again realise how incredible it is to have 300bhp + 4wd car that does near enough 40mpg - having this car puts into perspective just how efficient the 335d is for what it is. Chuckled as I got 'spotted' by the service manager on one of my 'DSC off rearward steering' exercises late evening last week round our local 4 lane roundabout. My consumption over the Christmas period has plummeted down to about 34mpg. Blame quiet empty wet roads and only having 225's on rear - have just been having too much fun. Not sure I'm going to like going back to having more grip on rear end when put summers back on.....
