Did the 08 come with a lightweight flywheel?

My car sure makes a lot of noises. It sounds like when I put a lightweight fly in my E36 M3. Is that why they got rid of the clutch from 08 because of the excessive noise associated with a lighter flywheel?

They changed the clutch to be slightly larger and more robust, so the flywheel changed too. What you're describing might be another design consideration to reduce chatter. My 08 clutch and flywheel was more audible the the new setup. The new one I can't hear at all.

But I think the latest version of the crank lost 4 lbs so there is partial compensation (even if weight gain and removal equal, the added mass of the larger diameter flywheel has greater effect).

Did the 08 flywheel chatter lead to any known mechanical defects besides the sound it makes?

Honestly mine is very quiet! I don't notice it until mid summer when the A/C is going full blast- then its louder for some reason, but only in neutral while the clutch is not engaged...

And I believe they changed it due primarily to complaints about the noise...

The way it was explained to me is that the 08's had a lighter flywheel which caused some noise. Of course there were a lot of complaints about this noise in the first year so they changed it to a little higher mass flywheel to reduce the noise. C'mon you're buying a racecar! Shouldn't mind a little noise :P

My 08 flywheel is a little chatty too... but it doesn't bother me... all the mechanical noises from the flywheel to the whine from the rear diff mounts to my exhaust just add to the eargasm because last V8 BMW racecar for the street
