Ever wonder where "335" came from.

Ever wonder where the "335" came from? (not exactly a 3.5 l. engine as you know). My friend and resident expert on all things fast, suggested that a likely inspiration was from the technology wonder kit that was the Luftwaffe. Late in the war, they introduced a twin engine super-screamer figher that would have left P51's littering Western Europe if they'd have gotten a few more built. Twin engine propeller/pusher design, ultra-fast, breakthrough technology.....hmmmm...sounds a little like my favorite car! Check it out motorheads...the Dornier 335...Me thinks rattling around Munchen are some guys pining for the good old days.

It's not surprising since the roundel itself is the bavarian flag with the blue sky as the background. ^_^

It came straight from the marketing department. They have to have a number that doesn't look any smaller than G35 or IS350 for marketing appeal, even though the BMW is a better car.

This 335 came from the same place 325 came from. I believe that the engine is the same in all versions of e90 & e92: 325, 328, 330, 335. The only difference is ecu settings and turbo in 335 version.

Nope. The 328 is significantly different from the 325 and the 335 has a different block than the other 3. There are numerous other differences as well.

My opinion is that since the 335i is a direct competitor to 350z, G35, and IS350, that's where the name came from.

Because it has the same power as a 3.5 liter V8.

Just kidding, its just marketing. Nearly every BMW is rounded up. 550i, 750i, 325i, 328i, 528i etc.

The reason is because they couldnt have a 328i and a 330i, so they created a 335i to distance itself numerically from the 328i

In all reality, I think it was done for marketing purposes more than anything. I remember reading somewhere that to cut costs of a newer 3.5Liter motor BMW decided they would just up the HP on their tested 3.0 motor by adding the turbo's instead of going with the bigger motor.
They in turn changed the model from a more accurate 330 to 335 to compete with it's similarly powered 3.5 liter competitors. *i.e. Infiniti, Nissan, Mercedes

NO, it's 335 and NOT 330 TT just in case the Twin Turbo's turn out to be a disaster there is no History at stake. They don't have to worry about tarnishing the 330s...

They can just sweep the 335s under the rug.

Bah as I mentioned on another thread, I'm going to pull my 335i and replace it with a 666...

Well I think there is a more ...mathematical explanation for the 335.

the number 3 is spoken, three - starts with T = 33 = TT = Twin Turbo
the number 5 is spoken, five - sounds like Drive
the letter "i" stands for "is"...

= Twin Turbo Driving is...

BMW - B stands for "Building" - M stands for "Motorsport" - W stands for "Winner/s"

Thus we can conclude that the 335i BMW is infact ...

Twin Turbo Driving is Building Motorsport Winners.

335i BMW...makes sense

----

335xi BMW - Twin Turbo Driving is (x = multiplication) or "more" ...due to translation you move the x after the B in BMW...making...

= Twin Turbo Driving is Muilding *More* Motorsport Winners.

....more or less.

Or..

3+3 = 6 > 5 ...and as we all know the difference between 6 and 5 is 1 and there is only 1 335i. "I" stands for imagination.

That took too much thought for me to read at 4:50pm on a Monday.

This is probably closest to the truth, but like the Kennedy assassination no one will really know for sure.
