Im trying to save up for the V1. If im gonna buy a detector, might as well buy a good one.
I totaly agree with you. "Those are words of wisdom" Better save and get something good. :rocks:

Either Bel RX65, Escort 8500 X50 or Valentine 1.

My girl just bought me a V1 as a gift, and it works so damn good.
Saved me couple of times already. I love this radar detector.
VERY different from cheap Cobra ones I used before. This one actually "works".

Listen to this man who is now getting to enjoy his V1. If you bought a 40,000 dollar car, spend the 1 percent of the car's value to protect yourself from the pigs.

Steve is correct that radar waves bounce off hills, billboards, clouds, etc. However, they do not follow the curvature of the earth hence the term line of sight.

Steve is correct (earlier post) that a laser detector would be more effective in advising a motorist that he/she had been tagged if it were mounted closer to the aiming point. However, police officers sometimes don't aim as well as they would like and it is occasionally possible to pick up a laser alert aimed at someone else. This is moot from a practical standpoint as laser "protection" is more a marketing tool than anything else.

Mine is mounted to the right of my rear view mirror at the very top for several reasons.

1. This location, along with hardwire, makes it nearly impossible to spot for Virginia pigs, where radars are illegal. This is where I goto school and spend 6 months out of the year.
2. Mounting the radar higher allows for better reception of the various radar bands. I've picked up cops from about 3/4 of a mile away, a location they often stand at on the high way and by the time I'm there I drop it down from ~80 to 65.
3. If you want laser protection, get a laser jammer. If a cop shots a laser at you, all that the Valentine is going to do is notify you of when to look at your speedo so that you can tell the cop when he asks.

Go here....comprehensive, objective comparisons of several detectors...

SpeedZones

From what I gather, all the Whistler products are low end...

Be carefull, there are some commercial issues between that company and Valentine Research. Some of the data might be lean toward some brands.
There are so far two 3 mayor RD, the RX65, V1, ,and the Passport X50. I think should choose one depending on your commute. I heard that the X50 and the RX65 are very good on City driving and the V1 on highway. So fat I own a V1 , I have beenn drivning the Palisades Intestate Parkway for 4 years no tikets so far, I get from englewood clifs to Pearl River in less that 20 min. You do the math. :rocks:

A cheap RD will get you more tickets than having no detector at all. In addition to the false security that can get you into trouble, if you are stopped cops are not going to cut anyone with a detector a break. I once watched a police set-up where one team zapped cars from one location, watched for brake lights, and then the downstream team selectively pulled over the cars with the detectors.

Downshift and E Brake. I NEVER use the regular brakes to slow down after it goes off.

I once asked my friend's uncle who was a cop, and he said that if he shots someone and then they hit their brakes, he will deffinetly pull them over. If they dont, it'll depend on how bad they are speeding.

Manual mode, tap-tap-tap! then brake slightly so the car doesn't look like its nose-diving, and pull up the e-brake.

all this should be done in like 0.0001 second before the laser get to you.
really, radar detector won't save your ass from getting a ticket.

There was a radar review where if you are instantly shot, V1, V1000 or whatever doesn't do jack. You are toast.
Radar detector is an additional "eye" helping you out. 3 eyes are better than 2. thats what its all about.
