Is there an Alarm option for the 2006 3-series?

I spoke to the sales person and asked about the alarm security system for the new 2006 3 series. It's weird that BMW doesn't offer it as an option. Do they not have an alarm system for the 2006 3 series? because the sales person checked their manual and told me that BMW has security alarm for 3 series up to 2005. and 2006 is N/A for now?????

IMPORTANT question. If they do have the alarm system, should I get it? or should I get Lowjack instead or both?

thanks

If you have the Premium package, then the BMW Assist functions similarly to Lojack, but is supposed to be much better.

Actually, its not, and if anyone tells you that, ask them why they say its better.

The BMW Assist feature that sends the data of where the car is located (GPS) is only working when the ignition is turned on. So if someone steals your car on a flat bed or parks it before you get a chance to contact BMW Assist, then you are simply SOL.

Lojack works off of the batter and has a backup battery.

Of course there's a OEM alarm for the 2006. Many on this forum has it. Whether to get it or not depends on your choice. If you really really really want the blinking LED under the rear view mirror or acroustic confirmation when locking/unlocking, get it. Or if you park at places where you don't feel comfortable in, get it. I don't see the reason why I would want to get one because I park in safe parkades and at home, in the garage locked.

I was told by an insurance agent that BMW assist is much more precise than Lojack, that's all. He also said that the Lojack-type discount would apply to the car. I don't know anything about it shutting off with the ignition. But how can that be? It's supposed to call the BMW assist center if you get into an accident. And the car shuts itself off (fuel line, etc.) if the accident is severe enough. Does it just give the last known position? I don't know the details...please share if you know.

Nonsense..... the car does NOT have to be on for bmw assist to locate the car. I know. My co-worker's 06 325i was taken from his parking spot at work. He called BMW assist and they located the car.... parked... turned off... at his x-wife's condo 60 miles away.

Okay, that's what I thought. That makes sense. Also makes sense for an accident.

By the way, that's some story about your co-worker ! Hopefully he's reuinited with his baby again (car not ex-wife ).

If your engine gets removed, that doesnt turn off your ignition. Its theory is that the accident isnt severe enough to break the wiring/power supply to the vehicle.

On bmwusa is tells you that you that you don't need to have the ignition on for bmwassist to work:

Link: http://www.bmwusa.com/bmwexperience/bmwassist/faq.htm

"Yes. In order for the system to work properly, GPS and underlying wireless services must be available and functioning; your vehicle ignition must be turned on (except for SOS and stolen vehicle recovery services), battery charged and connected, and vehicle's electrical system operational; services may be limited to certain geographic areas. All services are subject to the terms and conditions of your subscriber agreement."

BUT recovery does not mean alarm. Once it is gone I don't want to see it again. I would much rather prevent theft. I am not sure alarm prevents it though.

I was just going to post this.

I still feel retarded. A bmw with no alarm. I really REALLY want to know why bmw decided to put that as an "option". It should be standard. WHY? WHY??????

LuJack is worthless, especially if you have a Poosche.

It's nearly impossible to steal a modern car without the keys, long gone are the days of 'hot-wiring', so in the UK they just break into your house and steal the keys then steal your car with them, so an alarm would be useless then anyway.

But you're allowed to kill burglars - which we aren't. (we have to make sure they don't hurt themselves on any dangerous items in our homes - seriously)

I keep hearing that the alarm should be a given.
Face it, most alarms that come factory installed are garbage and I'd rather pay for a real alarm system than get a false sense of security from some hooked into my car horn alarm.

I thought i read somewhere that when you get in an accident the battery is cut off, so if this is the case and bmw assist still works then it must have its own power source, ie battery.

The power to most of the vehicle is disconnected via an explosion of a connector on top of the battery after a severe accident. A seperate line connecting the battery to BMW assist, hazard flashers and door locks remains connected.
