Sorry this might sound a bit dumb to most. But if you dont ask you never know. What is the difference between the BMW performance intake and the K&N that SpeedReligion do?

I understand that the K&N is only the Air Filter! While the BMW Performance Intake looks like the whole section.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but K&N now do a proper induction kit for the 330d, not just a replacement filter.

Has anyone tried this???

Almost certainly warranty null & void as the K&N is not an OEM filter.

I wouldn't be so sure...

For numerous reasons, including the fact that BMW issues a K&N filter with the BMW Performance induction/air intake for the E90 330i as part of the kit.

They also fitted a BMC K&N style filter to the M3 CSL and the new M3 4.0 V8 also uses a K&N type filter.

If they are so bad and un warrantable, why would they offer them for the above cars?

I'm not saying they will accept it straight away on a 330d, as dealers have a lack of reasonability in areas like this, but I can say that if anything happened the air filter shouldn't be to blame and you would have a case for discussion, that is if you where to leave it in the engine if you had a problem rather than removing it before it went to BMW...

I would think BMW would take the line that if the filter had *caused* the failure or was in any part consequential to said failure, then that parts warranty would be null and void.

I don't know how they look at mods - anybody out there been brave enough to test it?

The change in mpg is evident all through the rev range and also shows an improvement of the engines willingness to rev toward to red line and also slightly reduces the turbo spool up time.

It is a noticeable modification that is very cost effective and can be swapped to further vehicles as the K&N is a serviceable item that carries a 1,000,000 mile warranty.

When you sell the car, simply remove it, put your current one back in and as the fitment is the same for any 3.0L d engine that BMW have ever made from 1999 to present day, from the first 184hp E46 330d's to the current E90 330d's, 325d's, X5's, X3's, 525d's, 530d's, 730d's etc etc.

When the air intake is combined with our free flowing performance exhaust, with either larger 330 style tips or our 335d twin exit system, increases of around 5 mpg are seen and the engine will rev to 5000 rpm like a petrol engine car.

You will definitely notice the difference.
Ant I have not seen the 330 exhaust you do with just twin pipes like the original, how much is the free flow exhaust. I have only seen the twin 335 style one.
How much is exhaust and filter fitted, and is it just the back box, thanks

Well I've just replaced the air filter in my 330d at 50,000 miles and it was filthy!

I would now change it at 20,000 mile intervals, 60k is far, far too long a period.

I've taken some pics so will do a comprehensive how-to later.

Totally agree....60k is far,far too long. Should be changed much sooner. Extra cost to change will be offset to some degree by fuel savings.

Indeed; and I have you to thank Rich for alerting me to the 'problem'.

I was shocked when I opened the casing (which is no mean feat!)

Looking fwd to an economy increase now. Bit of a trip later down the 303, so we'll see.

had a similar airfilter layout on my E46 320d- I've found pieces of windshields in there.
just a thought, why put in a high performance air filter, and install a cold air intake with a second filter? In principle the downstream filter (far from easy to get to) filter should stay clean forever with minimal pressure loss, yet you avoid any risk on leaks in the plumbing (I would not run the risk of leaving this filter out). And the 1st filter will stay much cleaner than the orignal over time.
One badly sucked leaf in the orginal set up ruins your intake performance without you knowing it.
