Being wrong about dumb engineering isn't a bad thing.

I read the motor trend article the other day, and when I saw the part saying that it's not a hatch, my heart sunk. I guess I'll end up with a used F36 4GC someday instead of one of these when my E90 finally falls apart.

It's like a dog dragging it's a**

It pulls instead of pushing from the back.

Or even better than the Mini?

Look, in this segment, what did the other Germans do?
Yes, they opted for "smartness", aka space/cost and not the 3% of entusiast who'd prefeer a RWD.
We can hate it as much as we want, but BMW choose not to be uniqe within this segment, looking at the numbers, who can blame them?

And for f*** sake, do not - ever, compare this to the goat 3 series, E46!

It's a entry level sedan from BMW, that's it.

At this point, why the hell not, I suppose....

It's being mounted in a car that's called a coupe, yet is a four door version of a two door car

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_ID.3

(Yes, that's a little tongue in cheek. I know *you'd* be on board with me ron_jeremy, but the market here is the USA isn't quite ready to accept this... yet.)

What do you mean that our market isn't ready for it? I see probably twenty to thirty CLAs and A3s for every 1er or 2er. These things will be everywhere.

If they put an Electric power train in it, it might actually be everywhere like a Tesla Model 3 is just about everywhere.

Exactly my point. The market wants a small gas-powered BMW sedan, not a small electric BMW hatchback. Or at least that's what the numbers say. In reality, had the i3 looked more like the F20 1 Series or indeed the ID.3, BMW might be in a very different place right now.

The other factor here is that BMW will have a comfortable margin on the 2 Series Gran Coupe while VW will be treading on thin ice (ha! - no pun intended) with the ID.3. The fact of the matter is that weening yourself off the ICE means accepting significantly lower margins for an interim period (for what is essentially an unknown length of time), and everyone is trying to hold out as long they can, waiting for their competitor to take that step first. If you'v ever watched an indoor bike race, it's something like the strategy they use at the start:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_(track_cycling)

Quote:
Unlike the sprints in athletics, these events do not usually start with riders sprinting from the starting line and they are not confined to lanes. The early parts of each race will often be highly tactical with riders pedalling slowly, as they carefully jockey for position, often trying to force their opponents up high on the track in an attempt to get their rivals to make the first move. Some even bring their bicycles to a complete stop, balanced upright with both feet still on the pedals and both hands on the handle bars (a track stand), in an attempt to make the other rider take the lead. Track stands can only be held for a certain time and it is not permissible to go backwards in a track stand by rocking backwards and forwards as the judge will be following the track stand from the bottom of the track. The reason for this behaviour, as in many track cycling events, is both aerodynamics and tactics.

Oh, my mistake. I thought you were saying that the savvy American consumer wasn't ready for a fwd BMW.

But I don't mind the i3 and like the driving dynamics and can even handle the style. But it needs two to three times the range. The MiniE will fail for the same reason and it's not even out yet.

For now.

There is no reason i3 doesn't have a 200 mile battery.

BMW is so far behind in the EV segment it's absolutely ridiculous.

But you can add a motorcycle engine that our government won't let you control that still leaves the range well behind the competition.

Now that's funny.

I'd never own an i3 REx.
