Oil Sensor Problem 30 mins out of the LOT
Hi Guys,
I just picked up my Jet Black/Terra 330xi today and within 30 minutes of leaving the lot, the 'check oil' picture came up on my odometer panel. I have given it back to the dealership to fix and they said that something is probably wrong with the Oil Sensor because it is showing the Oil at "Min". Just a little worried guys because you don't expect these types of problems in a car you've just paid 40K for. Should I be asking for a new car or since this is just small problem, should I wait and see how it works after they fix it? I would appreciate any and all advice please. Thanks |

welcome to e90post!
Congrats on your new car. I would wait and let the dealer take care of it. As long as the oil wasn't really at the minimum it shouln't matter. Maybe try and get some free stuff out of the deal. It's a machine made by men, there will be problems sooner or later. Sooner for you I guess. Sorry. Use the problem to your advantage. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Guys,
Got the oil sensor changed and everything is fine. Thanks for your help. Can't wait for the break-in period to get over so that I can drive this car the way its supposed to be driven. Thanks Again. |

Seems to me this whole oil sensor/no dipstick scheme is not very useful to the owner of the car. If the sensor fails, it reads "low on oil". If it is actually low on oil, it will read "low on oil", with a working sensor, of course. So, when you do see the oil level warning, is the oil level actually low? No way to tell without going to the dealership, it seems.
There was another thread on this where the dealership apparently did not have a way to verify the oil level. Is this true? Doesn't sound right. What is the reasoning behind the removal of the dipstick? I can understand the use of the oil sensor to tie into the rest of the vechicle's engine management system, but removing the dipstick? Over zealous engineers or accountants would be my guess. |

I suspect that the oil level sensor sans dipstick was employed by BMW, etc. (1) because they sought to idiot proof the cars realizing that most drivers pay little attention and, (2) because some folks leave the dipstick loose (unsealed) resulting in rough running (vacuum leak) and fault codes/warnings.
