iDrive controller swap?

I've been searching up and down and have only come across the new iDrive controller swap on E90's, E92's, and some E60's.

Can this be done on an E70 X5 pre-LCI? When I do a VIN search on realoem.com for 2010 models, it comes up as a 1991. So I did a manual search and came up with 6582923116 and 6582923117 for LCI models, and 65829240957 for pre-04/10 models. This supercedes to p/n 6582924056.

Then the frame part number is 51169170917 that holds the controller in place.

From what I've read (for other models), if you update to the current software versions with your old controller, afterwards you can swap in the new controller without any problems.

One issue the 3 series had was that the 2007 models had issues, but the 2008 model year supports the controller just fine. You would also need the newer trim for the console to mount it. I would be a bit worried as you have a 2007, but it doesn't do any damage in the 3, just doesn't fully function. You could pick up the controller for a couple hundred and plug in and see, worst case you sell it and get most of your money back, best case it works and you buy the trim and keep it!

That's what I'm thinking too. Just buy and and worst case scenario, sell it to an E9x person.. My build date is 05/07, I'm going to make an appointment with the dealership to have all the systems updated (if any) before I try it out.

A guy tried it sometime ago and couldn't get it to work by just plugging it in. Not sure if he got the latest coding done before he tried it.

It can be done if you code though .. But you would need to get a 3rd party to help you with that.

Speak with Patryk on the forum. He will be able to help you for sure.

One other issue. If you then went back to BMW for a required software update, coding may not work since you have a unauthorized piece of hardware in your car now .. So you may have to switch back your old controller. Something to consider.

Do let us all know how you get on. It's a nice upgrade. The new controller is illuminated at night !

Thanks for the part number! I emailed Patryk yesterday and am awaiting his response. I ordered a controller today from one of the board members. I'll be ordering the frame and trim piece from Tischer later tonight.

Will report back with the results!

Hi, I am new to the forum and am looking for some help. I recently bought a 2010 X5M and the idrive controller is a little banged up. I would like to get it replaced but I'd rather do it myself than pay the dealer $500 in labor. Based on the part picture, It looks like replacement wouldn't be too difficult. What do you think? Thanks
