Coolant Smell
I recently noticed a coolant smell from the engine area from our X5. It’s a 2021 with 41k miles.
I checked the coolant levels and they’re not low but I did notice what appears to be a little bit of white residue on the coolant reservoir. Does this look like an indicator of a leak? I didn’t see any signs of a leak on the garage floor or underneath the reservoir area. I’ll be taking it in to dealer in a few weeks but wanted to know what you guys think? Thanks! |

It is quite obvious the joint between the tank and hose is leaking, right? Coolant zip through thr joint, flow down and caught at the lip, dry to the white residue. I wonder if there is white residue below the expansion tank? Kind of indicates how much the leak is. But either way, if car is under warranty, have dealer tske a look.

That white residue is dried fluid. There is some at the top near the cap. But is it from spillage the last time it was topped off or a leak?? Only a test will confirm. The dealer can pressure test it for leaks. I've had the reservoir replaced on prior BMWs I've owned under warranty after the dealer did a pressure test to confirm the leak.

Set up an appointment for later this month so we’ll see what they say.
Had never noticed the coolant smell before so never really looked at the reservoir before until now, but the smell is very noticeable after almost every use now. Luckily I’m still under warranty, also had the AC evaporator replaced in June 2023….so now contemplating maybe extending the warranty. |
