Hmmm, really?

I don't hear the Porsche-files complaining about the "new" GT2 RS.

I don't hear Americans complaining about the "new" 'Vette(s) / LE1s / Ford GTs / 350R / ATS-V / CTS-V / Focus RS

I don't hear Lexus fans complaining about the LC500

Korean car fans are positively giddy about the M - oops N - cars being built by Biermann at Hyundai / Kia.

Nope. BMW is lost in the wilderness, led by designers and accountants who don't know or care about an apex, but are happy to boast about hand-wave radio volume and more Roundels.

This is a golden age for auto enthusiasts. Some of the best vehicles produced during my lifetime are happening right now. Except in Munich.

It's a BMW thing.

The erosion began and end with the first x35 (e9x).

Before that, it meant displacement. After that... it meant some made up number that BMW decided met their current marketing needs.

No, as explained above this would be known as an F... 2 series. They have fwd and the corresponding hood line. The G...2 series will maintain rear drive and the longitudinal engine layout they m that old school loyalists love. Those that want a small rear drive 4 door can chase down the remaining clean e36ms and 330 zhps in existence.

It's really hard to distinguish between the two.

BMW, you've lost your mind and your dignity.

Makes one wonder if anyone in Munich even likes to drive?

Actually around Munich trains are great.

Awd trucks are the future. Sedans are an obsolete, impractical throwback. It's only a matter of time before the overall form factor evolves away from rear drive sedans except for specialized race applications.

So take care of your track car and step up to the future in the street.

That’s a bit of a tangent, and might pull the thread off topic, at which point I will move the posts to their own thread.

But at any rate, I take issue with some of what you predict. Strictly speaking, not all SUVs are classified as light trucks. Take the X1 and X2 for example. Now, they obviously aren’t sedans either, but my point is that the traditional SUV is not killing the sedan. Rather, the two have been converging into various types of crossovers which, while usually looking more like SUVs than sedans, often straddle the line. In all likelihood, they will continue on this path of convergence, and examples that straddle the line will continue to exist.

Obviously this evolution has caused the two-box, elevated ride height form factor to see a sharp increase in popularity. There’s no arguing that. However, not all crossovers are two-box. The fastback SUV was pioneered by BMW with the X6 and many others have come since it’s debut a decade ago. Automakers will continue to both make SUVs that are more car like, and offer more cars that are SUV-like, such as BMW’s Gran Turismo models, for example. These are currently somewhat niche, but as time goes on, expect that to change. Think in terms of vehicles resembling BMWs iNext Concept.

As for drive wheels, future electric platforms will allow for FWD, AWD, and RWD models to be built on a common platform. There is no doubt that AWD will continue its increase in popularity, but there are plenty of very high performing AWD vehicles.

Will the four door passenger car eventually die off? Maybe. But five door vehicles with a racy fastback profile and car-like driving dynamics will pick up the torch.

The RWD G42 2 Series coupe and G43 2 Series convertible will debut in late 2021. Those models will take us through 2028. After that, who knows. A lot can change in ten years. Some type of dedicated electrified (if not necessarily pure-electric only) platform is possible. It remains to be seen just how popular FWD vehicles will continue to be as we slowly move away from the ICE. Theoretically, a RWD EV is no more costly to manufacture than a FWD EV. It could even be less expensive because there is no cross talk between the drivetrain and steering. And with the driveshaft gone, there is no more packaging compromise. The i3 is rear-motor, RWD, and that type of packaging could become popular once the ICE is no longer in the picture.

The F44 2 Series Gran Coupe has reemerged, this time with production headlights and tail lights.

According to our latest future models information, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will arrive in late 2019 as MY2020.

The entry model (228i level) will be powered by the 228hp engine from the X1/ X2 and likely available in both FWD and AWD xDrive versions, while the M Performance model (m235i level) will feature the 302hp engine from the X2 M35i and come standard with xDrive.

I don't get the whole Grand Coupe. BMW cleaned up the lineup with even number = 2 doors, odd number = 4 doors now we have a 2 door car w/4 doors. Why? So that people can review and complain how the sloping rear makes it hard to get in and takes away headroom.

Who buys these cars? Dads that really want a 2 door but not a 4 door w/little kids? I sat in the back of a 3 series grand coupe with the door open and it was claustrophobic at best.

I also didn't get the GTs being that IMHO are horribly ugly...to the point I asked the dealer about them...he said they sell to people who want more cargo space but not an SUV/SAV and want the handling of a sedan. OK, I guess, I can get behind that...but guess those people never drove a BMW wagon b/c they handle like a sedan and have way more cargo space.

By the time the next gen is out 4 bangers will be 40i and 6 bangers 60i 😂

EDIT: this could actually make sense if the V12 is on its way out and they decide rebrand V8's as 80i. It'll still make a lot more sense than whatever they're doing now.
