B58 Downpipe Install issues

So yesterday my buddy and I tried to install the VRSF catless DP on my '17 340xi. This was so much easier then the N55! So much more room to get to top bolt and sensors.

Once we finally had the stock DP out we started to install the VRSF one. We were able to get it to connect to the turbo just fine but we could not get the bottom to slide into my stock midpipe to clamp it. We then took it back off and tried to make sure we could slide it in off the car to no avail. We tried using WD-40 and still no luck.

We had to just put the stock one back on the car because I needed to drive it today but was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? We measured the inside and it seemed to be the exact same size as stock DP but we did notice the walls were slightly wider on the VRSF one.

Heat it with a torch prior to insertion?

Did you check with VRSF that the downpipe fits Xi models?

As far as i know , it has only been tested on RWD

Would the cat back be a different diameter on xDrive vs RWD?

Yeah I wouldn't imagine that would matter. We cleared all the xdrive stuff just fine. Stock midpipe is what it won't fit.

Reason why im mentioning it is because 1) ER RWD DP is different then XI DP 2) VRSF website mentions RWD only not the Xdrive

I just double checked and the email receipt I received when ordered lists that it fits xdrive and non xdrive vehicles. Thanks for the input though.

I have a 340i xdrive with the VRSF downpipe, so you're good

Good to know thanks. Did you have any issue at all with the DP to Midpipe fitting together? I am wondering if this was a one off issue or not.

I had the install done at a shop, I didn't do it myself so I would assume mine fit without issue. The shop never said anything to me about it not fitting

how far off was it? could you have pried out the edges of the pipe flange to get it to fit over, then clamp it down?

Possibly...not sure. I was more concerned with the fact that my system is completely stock and the stock DP fits fine. I purchased a DP which states it will fit just fine and it doesn't. I didn't think i would have to possibly fab up a way to get it to fit. That's why I was asking around to see if anyone had this issue or maybe mine is just a defected one.

I saw that people have mentioned heating up the end of the midpipe to expand it to get it to fit. My only concern with that is would it ever be able to slide back out?

heating it up doesn't make sense to me. idk what was meant by that comment.

but i've had to use channel locks on my exhaust to pry out the flange slightly, slip it over, then clamp it down. you'd rather it be tight than loose so it seals properly. it's just metal so not really "fabbing" anything.

Heat only the part that is the outer pipe ... (I'm not familiar with down pipes so I can't comment which one to heat ). Don't heat the inner pipe since the tell expand and will not fit..

Heat causes metal to expand... its a common technique to get two pipes that are close to fit.

But once it cools with the pipes connected it will not come off for sure unless it's reheated.

I vote for heat... blow torch hot..$12.99 at Home Depot ...

Installed (reluctantly) my VRSF catless downpipe on my 340xi today. What a nightmare. It should have been super easy with all the room this thing has, but as I knew going into it...getting the downpipe on the stock exhaust was near impossible. I had to bang a supersized socket that graduated to a diameter larger than the pipe, essentially flaring it. Even then, it was a struggle. I'll back up and say it took me a frikkin' hour to find the nut from the Vband clamp that dropped into the black hole of an engine bay. It took me an hour and a half to get the downpipe on the stock exhaust. All said and done, it was about four hours. I used a lift. I can appreciate the sound and performance. I have to say, I am truly surprised at the smell from it. It's super strong when at idle with the windows down. No, I do not have an exhaust leak. I started it up on the lift and checked everything. In retrospect, I probably would not do it again. Now that it is on though...it's staying.

On edit: The VRSF DP fits the Xi models without clearance issues or need for spacers. The distinction from the ER, is the retention tab that bolts up like the stock one does. Since the VRSF doesn't have this, you can manipulate it as needed to fit.

Yeah I have a couple friends coming over tomorrow night to try this again. Now that we have done it once we should be able to do it pretty quick as long as we can get the dp in the midpipe. I had a catless dp on my 335 and my mazda before that so i am use to the smell. I am really looking forward to the sound though. The B58 sounds so good but on just the stock exhaust it is too quiet.

It does sound good though...
I don't see you getting them together, unless you are able to flare the stock exhaust portion. I was lucky to be at a place that had a massive socket. You might want to peruse Autozone or something similar for something you can smack with a hammer to flare the pipe. Once I got them both together, I was able to smack the tabbed portion of the stock exhaust back-to-front to complete the rest of the insertion. Best of luck hahaha.

Yes the DP is now installed. We were able to heat the end of the midpipe with a torch and then slip the VRSF dp in. Hardest part then was just getting it lined up perfectly on turbo but it only took us about 3 hours to install with breaks. Sound is much better now. Thanks for everyone's advice here as it was all useful.

So after having dp installed for a week I wanted to point out some things.

1. Sound is much better. It sounds more raw and is much louder.
2. Burbles are louder which is great but still not as loud as my 335 with DP and mpe.
3. Smell isn't as bad as 335 or my old Mazdaspeed with catless dp. Very surprised by this. In start up u can smell it and when u first stop at a light but then it goes away. Again can only smell it with Windows down.
4. O2 sensor spacer is working like a charm. No CEL yet.
