You're right there likely won't be a next-gen M3 before 2020, but for sure the F80 goes bye-bye in late 2018.

I believe M3, M4 convertibles are build at the REGENSBURG plant while the M4 coupes are specifically build in the München.. Not sure how they came up with this arrangement...

Exactly - F80 out of production as of October 2018. F82 and F83 will remain in production until 2020.

Crap. My lease ends 06/2018. I was going to try to get into a F80...

Do you think I should wait for next generation M3?

You should absolutely wait for the next generation if you don't need a car until early 2021.

However, if you'll need to drive between 6/2018 and then, I would consider leasing an F80 or anything else you desire.

I thought that the F80 EOP is 2018??

Does that mean there won't be another M3 until 2021?

Please read post #25 in this thread...

Ok, got that?

Now, two years-ish later since I wrote that, we have some inside information that indeed the G30-based M5, which is called the F90 by the way, will trail the G30 5 Series initial release by just over a year. So figure early 2018 with the G30 known to be dropping late 2016. Assuming it comes to pass, this is the closest an M5 has ever followed a 5 Series.

Armed with that information, we could assume that indeed M Division is stepping up their game (or if you are more cynical, watering down their products to feature less differentiation from Series counterparts), and make the bold prediction that "Gxx" (model code currently still unknown) M3 will trail the G20 3 Series by a similar amount of time. That would put it on the market as soon as early 2020.

However, remember from the other post I just asked you to read, we don't know yet whether the M3 will be allowed to break off from the M4 and become its own model like the M5 is (and has always been, really) compared to the M6. It's all guesswork. I probably wouldn't even give it a 50/50 chance at this point. So then, worst case is the M3 again has to wait for the 4 Series to drop (the G2x, in mid 2020), and come out along with the M4 in early 2021.

So, yes, just as always, M models will continue to see a gap in production between generations. How long is the gap going to be next time around? You now have the possible range. But even if we get lucky and it comes early 2020, can you really go without a car for 1.5+ years? No. So you've got choices to make. My recommendation: lease the F80 when your current lease is up, and then plan to get the next generation M3 after that. Or, who knows what else will come along by then - a lot can happen in five years.

When will the future generation GXX M3 Sedan begin production?

According to the sticky, the F80 M3 will end production 10/2018. Will the next generation begin production immediately thereafter?

It seems odd that the current M4 will be in production 2 years longer than the current M3.

The E90 M3 Sedan ended production in late 2011, while the E92 M3 Coupe went until 2013. The new F30 3 Series was introduced in early 2012 with the F32 4 Series to follow in late 2013. We did not get the new F8x M3/M4 until mid 2014, marking a nearly 3 year gap between production of the last M3 sedan and the new M3 sedan.

I would expect the same cycle and probably would guess it would be a 2020 model if that. There is no 2007 or 2014 M3 so BMW has a history of this.

My guess is that the GXX M3 Sedan/M4 Coupe/Convertible (assuming this scheduling remains the same) will first become available in mid-2021 (with the last F82's produced in June/July, 2020, last F83's produced in October 2020). There is another thread on this somewhere in this forum...

My plan all along was for ED in early spring of 2018. Being so late in the F80 production cycle, it makes me want to consider waiting for the next gen, but that means 2 or 3 years of waiting minimum, plus fear of being an early adopter, plus likelihood of long waits, and poor deals early on. That means that in practice I'd be looking at at least 2021 or 2022. Forget it. I'll pick the latest and greatest of the F80 next year instead.

Are you guys seriously talking about waiting for new models coming out in 2020 when it's still February 2017??? Why not just enjoy what's out now? There will always be a new model coming.

I personally don't really need a sedan until 2019, but I will grab a 2018 since production ends that year and I want to do ED with the kids, so I'll do it as soon as school ends.

My wife has a 2011 335is Coupe with a 7 yr/100,000 mile extended warranty (because of the whole N54 HPFP/turbo thing). Since it will be 7 years old in May 2018, it makes some sense to replace it then, although it could realistically go to 10 years/100,000 miles, but that might involve some expense.

But what to replace it with? It didn't make sense for her to get an E92 M3 in 2011, in fact she first had her heart set on an E90 328i but fell in love with the 335is after hearing the exhaust and seeing the sleeker shape of the LCI E92. Since purchasing her car in 2011, I bought a 2006 Z4 M Roadster in 2012 and last year bought an M4. She's got the M bug now, and we both track our cars, so I can't see her settling for a 340i or 440i. It doesn't make sense to get another M4 and she's always preferred a sedan, so that means that if she wants an F80 with another Euro Delivery, that pretty much means that we're looking at an F80 Euro Delivery in May/June 2018. Otherwise, she keeps the 335is for another 2-3 years before she could replace it with the next generation M3 sedan.

Sure, but that was not what was under discussion. The point was that if you don't grab a 2018, you have to wait 2-3 years for the next gen. And then it's a 1st year car.
