For down pipes and exhaust systems in general, I am not too concerned about legal issues. I am however concerned about environmental issues. Thus, I won't install exhausts or DPs with no cats as this will certainly produce extra pollution. I would be happy to install exhausts and DPs with higher flow cats whether they are technically legal or not.

They aren't illegal everywhere. Also you can use them strictly for off-road use as well. So.....

because race car.
to state the obvious though, it's all in the unholy pursuit of horsepower. I didn't expect a different reaction to your post than what ensued. truth is though, the EPA doesn't f*k around and the potential penalty from tampering with emissions devices is huge. it's a Federal offense with a potential fine of $2,500. not gonna put anybody into bankruptcy, but it's not a slap on the wrist like a speeding ticket. all it would take is for cops to start enforcing it. fact of the matter is though, they don't enforce it and I doubt anything is going to change that anytime soon. wouldn't be hard for them to do though - you can smell a catless car from driving behind one. |

What about the not inconsiderable environmental impact from mining for the rare minerals needed for the cat? Go Hybrid if you are concerned. |

Yes, I have done many, many mods before. All 15 of my BMWs have had mods, including 2 full Dinan cars, but all my mods were street legal and would pass my annual state inspection.
You can do what you want to your cars - your choice. I was just confirming that downpipes were illegal for street use. Enjoy

Actually down pipes are only illegal when they're catless. They also have catted down pipes which are legal. I personally would prefer catted in a car like this.

Sad to say, but this is how the car should sound in stock form. Why do we need to spend $4500 (guessing on price, too lazy to look up) on top of the purchase price to have the car not sound like a very loud lawnmower. Smh.

Still love it, and agree this is what should have come on the car to begin with. As far as performance gains go, if there are any, they aren't noticeable. Someone asked for a cold start video but the past few days it has been crappy out so I have not been able to grab it yet. I am out of town this week so I will hopefully grab that when I get back at the end of the week.

You can certainly get a modified / tampered smog device ticket here in California and get sent to the smog referee but that just requires paying some relatively small fines and putting your car back to stock to get signed off. |
