What do the Police do ?
Not wishing for a moment to start YET ANOTHER (!!) Winter Tyre and Run-Flat thread (surely there's already enough of those?) but last night I saw something that got me thinking ...
A Police e-91 Traffic car with the blues and two's on going VERY FAST at a round-about. There was very little traffic, and myself and and a couple of other cars had plenty of warning of his (her?) approach to the round-about (which is controlled by traffic lights) and despite our light being on green we all held position while the Police car went thru a Red and went on his way at considerable speed. It was actually quite impressive. It was a bitterly cold evening with the temperature already showing 0 (albeit completely dry). But that got me thinking ... do the Police change their cars over to Winter Tyres at this time of year? And, furthermore, do they run their BMWs on the standard run-flats? Anyone know? |

I was talking to some cops at a town fair, some of which was being held in the grounds of the police station and they drive run-flats like everyone else (it was an E91 we were standing beside) and, according to the cop, they don't change them in winter.

The interesting point to make is not about the tyres but a red light should be treat as a stop or give way even with using it as one of the three legal exemptions emergency service vehicles responding to an emergency have.

Some police forces do change their tyres over to winters, especially on the rapid-response vehicles. I have seen some police cars at Battersea on Vredestein Wintracs last year

Sorry mate, but I don't drive with fogs on. I'm talking the Piss out of the kid who impersonates cop cars on here who has his fogs on permanently.

The highway code states that you should pull over to the side and give way to Emergency Vehicles using their equipment. |

I've also NEVER seen the old bill with them on. But this kid seemed to think they did and also had police flashing lights fitted to his grill. Well worth having a look at the thread for a laugh mate.

I've never seen a police car, BMW or otherwise, with winter tyres on. Likewise for the ambulance service. Our fleet department would rather pay for recovery of stranded vehicles - which was several times a day last winter - than change tyres.
All our response cars are 4x4s... fitted with summer tyres...

Lets be honest it's only the last couple of years that have really seen the need for winter tyres. I'm sure they will adopt them if they find they are beneficial, but as we have had a few weeks of double figure temperatures they will probably stick with the factory runflats.
