2022 228i GC XDrive 8spd Sport Transmission

Hey everybody I am the proud owner of a new 2022 BMW 228i X Drive gran coupe. I know that the 2020 and 2021 models came with the eight speed sport transmission, is the 2022 only available with the sport transmission with the dynamic handling package now?

Since I donÂ’t have that package do I just have the regular 8 speed Aisin?

IÂ’m pretty bummed because my car does not have home link, nor the NFC digital key and wireless charger due to the chip shortage, but it is what it is I guess.

Most likely going to buy a wireless charging tray, doubt I will be able to code the digital key as IÂ’ve been reading that is difficult, but I am curious about if I have the sport transmission or not, thank you so much

Thank you for your reply, yes I know they all have the 8 speed aisin, but I recall reading that the X drives came with a specific sport transmission, perhaps it’s just programming, however in 2022 in the official BMW press release it states that the sport transmission is only available now with a dynamic Handling package, didn’t know if anyone could provide more clarity on that

Does this refer to the front wheel drive gc's not having steering wheel paddles? I have, like yourself, heard that xdrives come with a sports version of the gearbox..

Well my car sadly did not come with steering wheel paddles, and I know a lot of people don’t even use them but I do and I really enjoy it. There is two screws on the back of the steering wheel where they should be, and in several of the loaner 228i GC’s I have had that did not have many options they came with paddles, I think mine are missing due to the chip shortage? Just like my LED fog lights, the NFC digital key, my universal garage door opener, and lumbar support🤷🏻*♂️🤦*♂️😢

Yeah in 2020 and 2021 I have read that the X drives came with a sport transmission, I have been unable to find the specifics as to if it’s just different programming, or something hardware related. When reading a press release about 2022 models it says that the sport transmission is now available with the dynamic handling package. So I assume that I don’t have the sport transmission because I don’t have that package, car and driver got 5.1 seconds in a 2020 X Drive and my car feels plenty fast but they had the sport transmission lol

5.1 I know is an outlier most people were getting around six seconds, and there are so many variables, but 5.1 is pretty impressive. I believe that the model they tested had the M sport package, with a 18/19 inch rims and probably summer tires but don’t quote me…

The "sport transmission" with the paddles was an option in earlier 228i GCs (In the USA, at least, they were all XDrive those years). IIRC it was part of the "M Sport" package along with the usual Mish glue-on aerodynamics & logos.

For example, I have a 2021 XDrive 228i GC but did not get the M Sport package and do not have the paddles. I know a couple of people who bought their 228s with the M Sport package & they also have the paddles. I could certainly be wrong, but I don't think there is any other transmission difference besides the paddles.

The option codes are different for both transmissions (250 for the basic US model x drive 228i and 2TB for the x drive M235i). Based on the German language 2 series GC print brochure, the only difference is that 2TB has paddle shifters and launch control but I suspect 2TB is programmed differently to facilitate more rapid shift times. ROW GC models also offer several dual clutch gearboxes as well but unfortunately not in the US. If you decode your VIN you will see what transmission you have.

Hey thank you so much, I did decode my Vin but I don’t see anything regarding the transmission type, perhaps I’m looking in the wrong place but here is the full Vin decoder👌

That’s odd. All the decodes I did when shopping my M235i GC (and that included a few 228i as well) showed the transmission type. Not sure why yours does not but my guess is you have the 250 type. See the attached image below from the BMW USA order guide. It shows 205 Steptronic transmission for the MY21 228i vs 2TB for the M235i. I guess I transposed numbers in my original post. It’s 205, not 250.
