I don't disagree with you and would love to have a 2GC as my second car in our household, but even though the voices on the forums like this might be many, I highly doubt that there are tens of thousands annually that would buy them over a model like this one if cargo space, rear legroom and more would have to be compromised because of RWD?

Just a thought

BMW has their product line all screwed up. This looks more like a Subaru WRX than a BMW.

What part? Oh, you mean all those swirly marks and extra camo that are suppose to stop you from seeing what the car looks like?

May I ask where you got your x-ray vision from?

Why the GC is not RWD is due to its positioning in the market and its need to be competitive amongst its erstwhile competitors.
Driving dynamics is not enough in the highly contested compact segment. Whilst I do not agree with the decision. I do understand their reasons for it.
W H A T A B U N C H O F B S ! You mean it needs to be cheaper to build to produce a maximum profit margin for the greedy BMW of the actual executives. That being part of the cynical (and quite gratuitously) calculation in which the brand enthusiats (f... them, by the way) will be largely outnumberd by the gullibles buying like hot cakes.

Do we know that this isn't just for niche markets with super high taxes, especially with displacement taxes (going by the 4 cylinder)?

If I learned anything in life brand enthusiast always hate new things. Glock 19x comes out, "OMG how dumb can they be." 8 series photos leak, "OMG that is ugly and not a true BMW."

While these images didn't give tingles; I'll wait to judge until I get behind the wheel of one.

I do not think that the 2 Series is made for three people in the back, with or without the RWD. The shaft will not make a such difference. The trunk will fall under the same perception, if you need a bigger car, then you need a bigger car.

BMW are known for making some of the (if not the) best 6 cylinder engines in the world. There's a reason why the M140i can out pull an A45 once at three digit speeds.

Yet the coolest cars BMW make (or are about to) from all corners are denied the 6 pot. This new gran coupe won't get it. The next 1er won't. No hybrid models seem to have it (except the short lived ActiveHybrid 3) and even the flagship i8 has never been given it. The move to FWD on smaller models is controversial too.

Basically BMW's USPs are being eroded in front of our eyes. So back to this topic I'm left with the question why not just buy a more practical Golf R, or the fire cracker that is the new RS3...

It’s probably the camo plus the FWD proportions that are contributing to that.

I think it’s nearly certain this will be branded Gran Coupe even if it happens to have a hatchback like the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Yeah, bmw had tons of difficulty selling E36 and E46 and E90 sedans in the past.

There are many reasons to prefer BMW over an Audi S...
1) Price. Belive or not Audi is cheaper only on its base offering with literery nothing included.
2) Audi has no real quattro in its small cars. Not any more. Its quattro-ultra (esencially couple of haldex-like units) and just haldex, depending on the engine mounting. So it is an xdrive 2 series vs a haldex based s3. Same tech, approx same power and probably same performance.
3) Audi and VAG has reputational losses this days - there in US it is a dieselgate, while here it is a weak engines (ea888 burns oil) and weak, unreliable DSG gearboxes (dq200 is shit, dq250 had multiple problems, dq500 is relatively reliable, but differential is weak).

Yeah and nothing has really changed at all since then in the car industry right?

When Honda moved the Honda Accord up in size it moved the Civic up to replace it and brought the Fit below the Civic.
Because Honda realized that Those buyers of small sedans aren't going to completely disappear..

BMW moved the 5 and the 3 up in size and left a coupe and no sedan in the spot for the E82 1 series and now F22/F87 2.
They actually DO have 3 and 5 door vehicles (ala the Honda Fit) and those sell like hotcakes all over Europe because..Those buyers of small sedans didn't disappear..

They are now 2 generations late to the party and what has happened is other manufacturers have taken the sales in the spot that BMW abandoned.
BMW is now trying to rally back and indeed going the cheap route. We shall see how they fare in this category... but the fact that they are now building another vehicle in this category highlights the truth that ..Those buyers of small sedans didn't disappear..

BMW hoped that everyone that wanted a small vehicle would buy an X1.... and of course they will trot out the X2 as well... but we shall see if they can recapture buyers in the small luxury sedan market that they DOMINATED for decades.

Here are the current sales for 2 Series (coupe only - natch) - http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1462562

2 series sales don't even break out of triple digits each month.... because there is no sedan. BMW IS A SEDAN COMPANY.

they cut their teeth on the 3 SERIES, 5 SERIES, 7 SERIES. And yes.. while there were 3 series coupes and 6 series coupes.. Every BMW SEDAN model sells better than it's two door counterpart.
