BavSound Upgrade

I installed the BavSound Stage 1 and subwoofer kit today. The system sounds much better. I had the HK system. I was not expecting this much of a sound change. The bass hits harder and the mids and highs are very clear. I can feel the output of the subs on my legs now. The bass doesn't die out when you turn the volume up and there is no distortion. I'm very satisfied with the speaker system.

Did you replace all of the speakers (fronts, center, rears, trunks)? How long did the whole thing take? Did you break any of the plastic clips that hold the panels?

Replaced them all. Total time was about 5 hours. About an hour or so of that time was me trying to find my flathead screwdriver and prying the subs from their enclosure. BMW glued them in. I didn't lose any clips and surprisingly came away without any cuts or scratches. I probably could've done it a lot faster but this was my first time taking the panels off so I wanted to be extra careful.

Do you think just the under sear subs would be beneficial to swap out in a HK system? Or that gain would be minimal?

I think the gain would be worth it. They have a 100 day in car trial period too. So if you don't think it's enough then you can just send them back.

I don't think it would be worth it in the HiFi system without a bigger amp to push everything.

A follow-up question about the subs. Bavsounds' wepage says: "Our woofers are 10 dB+ louder from 20Hz to 60Hz vs factory woofers, resulting in twice the loudness in this critical 'sub-bass' range (and over 8x the sonic energy)." Doesn't music sound too bass-heavy with the Ghost subs? Did you have to adjust the EQ down in the bass region to compensate for the subs higher efficiency? What kind of music do you listen to that sounds much better now?

It all depends on what kind of music you listen to. I mostly listen to hip hop but I'm an audiophile and I need to hear all frequencies. I haven't changed the equalizer settings yet but I will go through them tomorrow to see what can be done. Just off top of my head, I will probably turn the lows down and increase mids/highs. With the HK system, I had the bass up to try and compensate for the bad woofers.

I've been using this track to tune my systems by ear for years now.

I too did this to my 2019 x4 m40 last year and I couldn't be happier with the one caveat that I wish bavsound made the amplifier for this car. I did mine in two phases ghost subs first and drove that way for almost two months it was an improvement by itself then I also did the mids and tweeters. I also was never happy with the HK sound and when I removed the original speakers I could see what was wrong, they were very flimsy. this is not necessarily louder but it is abundantly more clear.

I was so disappointed when I saw those speakers. The HK system is only $850 and we probably just paid for the amp, equalizer and surround sound configuration. I wouldn't be surprised if those are the same speakers in the HiFi system.

Awesome setup. Something I really want to do in the near future.

Sorry to add more terrible questions but....
Any thing you would have done different? Any tips or notes about removing the trim and seats?

I've been on the fence on this.. I'm almost there.. but seems like such a PITA to remove all the panels.

HK speakers build quality are better than HiFi systems. Even the tweeter size are different. HiFi is more like 0.75" while HK is 1" dome. But HK is still not up to the quality of some aftermarket speakers. Take HiFi system and use the differences to do the upgrade will give you more return in terms of sound quality.

would agree regards standard Hi-Fi and put bucks into better amplifier. Did exactly this on my F25, installed Audiotech Fischer DSP amp into my Hi-Fi equipped car and improvement in sound quality, detail, separation, soundstage and volume was impressive. Stock speakers are actually quite capable, go for a quality amp upgrade before thinking speakers. True DSP amp enables one to tweak the system to optimize for your cars speaker placement and listening position (driver seat, etc), the HK amp in your cars cannot match that capability.

They have their 17 winners already.

I am pushing for a group discount. I have some codes from them, for up to $100 off > $900 orders; I am hoping for $200 > $1,400.

Received these discount codes from Justin @ BavSound:

Here's a code that can help take $25 off the cost of your order: CH25OFFBAV
For orders over $447 here’s a $50 code for you: CH50OFFBAV
For the full $100 off orders over $900 use code: CH100OFFBAV

I couldn't get him to go lower; but he did mention they may have a discount depending on what happens to sales with recent virus stuffs happening.

I also have the standard hifi option. I did the bavsound speakers, bimmertech alpha amp, grs underseat woofers, and added a 1500watt audiocontrol amp with a custom box for 4 10inch sundown subwoofers. The upgrade is 1000% worth it and even without the subs in the trunk its well worth it

Do the amp first, that may we'll be sufficient after you do some listening- if still not up to what you want, then consider speakers.
