BMW F40 118i now at dealer

I cannot see a F40 area yet so admin please feel free to move to the correct area.

I was at my local dealer today (Sytner BMW Leicester) and they had the F40 118i on display:

Except for actually being a newer car, what features does the F40 have to make an F20 owner want to swap? Certainly not looks. Not the FWD. Not the missing hand brake lever. Not the missing six cylinder option. Seems like a significant downgrade to me.

Extra space at the rear. "Nothing else matters." By the way, that whining made me read a 1 Series obituary (for me it died back then when they stopped selling F21 around, even before they withdrew the internals as well, so it's so easy now) and I noticed some humour explosion: "Reversing assistant stores the steering movements for any section the car has just driven forward along at no more than 36 km/h (22 mph). The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 meters by steering it along exactly the same line it took when moving forward.". They "must be joking, right?".

I cannot say "it's a total shit" maybe...it isn't....even if it has nothing more to offer than a Golf, or a Focus.

But

As I'm an E87lci and a current F20lci owner, I wouldn't swap for one of these. For sure, if I had to switch to another hatchback, the only choice should be the RS3, the only that has something that worth the money, an engine that has more than 4 cylinders.....and at least the 4 wheel drive.

The only thing I know is that there isn't any hatch that worth the swap from an F20 today. The only swap that would worth the money is to change from an F20Mperf to an F87comp.

So, hold tight your "old" 1ers guys....

Vote with your wallet if you want to complain about all these; don't buy the travesty.

Then maybe BMW will go "oh, shit, we fucked up."

Of course they know there are only two renegades (ovekvam and Weiman) to buy it here. They should issue a limited edition in fact. They intend to sell it to different people actually. And those who already bought the "entry" BMW are expected to move on. Along the model line or the hell out.

But the point is valid anyway. It was strange to see people support the right 1 Series with words only instead of having bought it, which is what only counts with the manufacturer, evidently.

I am going to test the F40, but I doubt that I will want to buy it. Maybe if they offer a fully electric version.

Interesting to read your opinion ovekvam. I hope they allow you to test the car dynamics. But I doubt this F40 will appeal any of the users here. I think the target for the design is a very very different profile (urban, fashion, apple...)

For me the i3 is infinitely more attractive as electric hatchback.

I think the i3 is too tall, and it is somewhat short on range. I like the lightweight carbon fibre used, but I would prefer something lower and more sporty, with wider tyres. I was hoping for the electric Mini, but it has too small battery.

The i3 will probably be discontinued quite soon now.

I checked the specifications now. It has 20 liters extra in the back, but not if you fold down the seats. Then it is a draw. Both the F20 and the F40 have 1200 liters. And the F40 has less space in the fuel tank. 42 vs 52 liters.

The turning circle has gone up from 10.9 meters to 11.4 meters.

I've no doubt you will buy it. Inevitably. They'll do it for you, as you wish: https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/10/07/r...aunch-by-2021/.

A bigger battery, perhaps (in the front end?).

You could very well be right about that! :-)
I was interested in the electric Mini, but the battery was simply too small. The Mini will also come in a new version around 2021, with bigger batteries. I will probably prefer a BMW i1 anyway.

There is no hurry, as I am quite happy with the F20.

If you would like to go FWD, I could recommend getting a Mini

I like the lower weight of the Mini, but the interior is significantly inferior to the one series. I am not really 100 percent comfortable in the driver seat of the Mini. Besides, the electric version has a very short range.
