Just back from a drive to vegas from SoCal....what a great car
Fifth time doing this drive in the d....and all I can say is what a great road car....so fun....so good / I've owned 30+ cars (s, amg, m, lifted trucks etc) in my 42 years and I can honestly say this is the best of all worlds.....only problem was the 20 min convo at the truck stop when I was buying diesel and a couple of the drivers turned out to be fanboys of the car and I was caught up in diesel convo (all good).....I know we are often times motivated to post to these forums only when things go bad/wrong....but figured I would balance that with some good...5 in the car....and 32mpg despite my right foot (thank you v1)
Ps.I'm a guy that replaces cars annualy....but for the life of me I have no idea what I would/could replace this car with so for now (and the foreseeable future)....this ones a keeper Last edited by chenry; 04-16-2014 at 08:58 PM.. |

Great drive up and down the 15 huh? I have made that drive several times and the 335d makes such quick effortless work of the grades. Filling up in Vegas is not needed for the trip back despite hitting speeds well over the limit.
I hate to hear of bad news with these cars because they make such great drives. Long live our 335ds

Adding to the good news on the 335d, Last month my father and I took a ~2300 mile road trip from PA down to the Rolex 12 hours at Sebring endurance race. The 335d yielded us 35.6 mpg for the trip and ran strong the whole way. The car is just effortlessly fast on the highway. Mash the go pedal to pass a truck or slower cars and you are in triple digit speeds instantly. My conservative 70 year old father was also enjoying the passing prowess of the car during his stints behind the wheel.
Part of me loves how stealth the car is with its ordinary looks but amazing performance capability...but then part of me wishes BMW did more to brag about it like ///D badging or something to make the diesel stand out. |

I just did a run on the famous Angeles Crest Highway for the first time last weekend and boy was it exhilarating. The endless amount of torque with sticky PSS tires truly made me appreciate the 3-series' chassis and balance. I should do it more often from now on since the highway's only less than 15 minutes away from my house.
Also, I swore I spotted Leno's yellow P1 but then again it could of been someone else's. Wasn't quick enough with the camera!

Since owning the 335d, I don't feel the void for an M5...although I wouldn't mind getting one again.
Definitely a great car to drive, puts a smile on your face when you see 35+ MPG on the dash cruising 90+mph. Technically not saving money, since diesel costs more than premium (in NY at least), but that's the government to blame. I love fooling the diesel pick up truck guys, who yell at you "not that one, not that one! That one is diesel!". LOL |

I'm a fan of responding, 'the dealership told me it would run better if I put diesel in it now and again.'

This car shines on twisting and hilly roads.
There are stronger cars with better performance but none with the combination of a friendly and full of torque ride in a very well balanced chassis. I am having tons of fun daily with mine since my move. While in US, drag races from one stop light to the next were fun as most of the drivers would not believe a regular bmw was this quick. In Europe the car is easily recognizable, everybody knows it. The blast is to use the full extent of torque on every turn exit and rolling hills roads. Unfortunately it is no match on the autobahns to the army of porsches and BMW 40d and 50d engines they have here...
