I do get a bit of a whistle from the sunroof when I first drive the car -- for about a mile or so -- when it's really cold, around zero [F].

Speaking of tomb-quiet! I prefer the symphony of melting 255s and a sweet I-6. And I would not dare drive an LS over 120.

It's not an "air passing over the sunroof" type noise. It's like someone blowing a high-pitched kazoo in your ear. Only when the roof is closed. Only when the wind velocity gets pretty high - 90-100 mph (car speed or car speed plus outside wind speed). Doesn't always happen. But the first time it did, I thought some type of warning signal was going off.

I get a high pitched squeal between 75 and 90. Above that it goes away. Sounds like it is coming from the passenger side front window on the lower part. Running the wipers doesn't change the sound. When it is very windy out it can change the pitch and frequency a bit. Might start at 70 then and fade in and out with the wind gusts. Not sunroof related in my opinion for me at least. My dealer is 3 hours away so I'll wait for the first service to have them check it out. Very annoying. Have not found a solution posted anywhere. Just people with the same issue. Hasn't anyone had this looked into and fixed? I have a 330i by the way. My gift to myself after my second tour in Afghanistan.

The E91 panoramic sunroof is much noisier. I have found for both that closing the inner shade pretty much deadens it.

Check the seals around the roof, as well as even that flappy wind deflector thingie that pops up when roof is fully open. But my whistling noise happens when my roof is tilted open and not fully opened!!

I almost never use the sunroof because the sun goes in but the wind goes to the back seats...

+3 How true it is. My previous car was a 1998 Honda Accord.
In all fairness, the Accord was quieter with the wind deflector when the sunroof is open. My BMW was still noisy with the wind deflector on. I feel there is still some turbulent air coming into the cabin. I also noticed that at above 70 mph, I can hear the noise generated from the wind deflector even with the sunroof closed. My impression is that the deflector does its job in keeping most of the wind from entering the cabin, but the airflow over the roof is not as smooth so it didn't do anything to reduce the wind noise. I ended up taking it off permanently because I couldn't stand the look of a speed bump on the car roof, even though my car is black and the wind deflector is a dark smoke color. I open my sunroof when I'm cruising in town at speeds less than 45mph. On the open highway, I close the sunroof to keep out the wind and the noise. This seems to be a good compromise for me. So there, I did went wrong with a $35 part. Live and learn. |

The noise I've got is not mistakable for any typical wind passing over a sunroof-type noise - open or closed. I'm gonna get off my a** and take my car to the dealer for them to figure it out. Big concern is them screwing something up by guessing at the problem. I'll post the fix once it's resolved. If all else fails, I'll be in the market for a 98 accord.

My 335 just started doing this -- it is a high pitched whistle, starts at about 80 mph depending on the wind. I suspect something on the passenger side rubber windshield trim. Taking it to the dealer this AM to have summer tires put on -- wooohooo! more on those in a different thread -- will see what they do and report back this PM. With so many of us having the problem you would think that there would be service bulletin.
