I just saw the paint work for the first time today and to my eyes - it just doesn't look like it was matched well.

The blue looks darker on the bumper.

I think I'm also seeing a bit excessive orange peel.

The metallic flakes look.. off..

They only painted the bumper and I don't think anything was done to match. No overspray - which I had initially requested to feather the quarter panels and trunk lid.

Any thoughts? Am I nuts? I don't know if the photos compare to in-person impressions...

as a painter, bumpers are always off in color. This is a fact. To me, that bumper looks acceptable. Yes they could've blended both quarters for a "perfect" match, but insurance likely did not pay to blend.

IN regards to peel, bumpers have (you guessed it) more peel as well than the rest of the body. This also looks acceptable to me. If you more specific questions, pm me

I've been through something similar. Bumper color is always off in certain lighting. You can verify by checking out new cars at the dealership. It's because of the extra flex additive they put into the paint. Orange peel seems quite noticeable though.

One way to check is to compare the color/peel/flakes to the front bumper. It should be made of the same material.

That only occurred to me after I had left.

I refused to take delivery.. the car is still at the shop and they're filing for a supplemental on getting it matched with the rest of the panels. I may have to fight to get this done properly.

Sorry to hear. I have been through a very similar experience when my car had 2K miles on it.

Where did you take your car to?

Metro in Seattle did an amazing job on my bumper and you can not tell the difference. Mine was a 20mph collision and they just had to replace the bumper cover and the diffuser.

My car has dash cams and it captured the crash and the guy who hit me was on his cell phone. He agreed to pay for everything and we did not go through insurance.

This city is becoming really unbearable to drive with all the idiots on our roads. The whole diminished value claim is pretty useless unless your car is brand new. If I recall correctly that M5 had higher miles (50K +) was a 2013. Insurance company won't make it easy on you at all.

Glad to hear that you are ok and keep us posted.

wrong. you can't compare color to something that isn't adjacent to the part your painting. You cant see them together simulataneously, so it is irrelevant.

When you fix it up, let's go on a cruise. I see your park place plates. You're from WA?

Queen City Auto Rebuild. They have a reputation here for being very good. To their credit, they did admit that the orange peel was excessive after I sent photos and pointed it out. They're going to at least correct that.

I called Metro today. Getting some third party opinions may help me deal with the insurance company.

Insurance declined blending the bumper. Right, surprised? Ok I know there's some disagreement here. But here's the thing - I expect the car restored back to the same condition as it was before the accident.

Was the bumper blended before the accident? Yes it was.

Is the bumper blended after the accident? No. It looks worse.

The shop is telling me that matching to the quarters is basically impossible. There's only one way to properly match the bumper and that is blending with the quarters. I feel that the insurance company is required to blend if that's what it takes.

Dealing with insurance companies has become progressively more difficult; they will always try to pay the minimum. I had a similiar incident with my wife's car with a rear bumper and after weeks of back and forth the car was sent back to the body shop and the bumper was re-painted and blended. Mind you, I've been with this insurer (Statefarm) for almost 30 years and have only had 1 major claim 20 years ago. Persistence may work but certainly no guarantees. Good luck getting this crap sorted out.

I went to Queen City for my front bumper and wasn't happy with the service.

Had to keep the car there for an extra week because I had paid for a buff and wax of car and my 7 year old could have done a better job.

You are right rejecting it. My front bumper a year later looks to be a shade off. I have a carbon black F10 so know its a difficult color and why I went to queen city. Used to use them years ago and they were top shop. Not so sure now.

I've asked for a repaint. They're working with me. I told them to slightly lighten the blue and paint me a sample. The plan is that I'll drop in on Monday and tape the sample down flush between the quarter and bumper matching the surface curve.. then I'll take a few photos and check the blend.

If the mix looks better, I'll green light the spray and that should be ok.

The shop doesn't think they can make it any better than it already is.. so I'm trying to help guide the result I want.

I'm on two fronts.. Still fighting insurance for a blend with the quarters too.

You can easily compare the front fender/front bumper to the rear fender/rear bumper to see if the deviation between the two surfaces is comparable front to back.

bumpers have more orange peel than regular panels, like i said prior. This is not an opinion. It's a fact. Unless you're driving a Bentley, this is what it is.

I usually hang in f10.5post forums. Last week I backed into my garage door and got two deep scratches. The bumper will need to be repainted. My only problem is the paint match. I talked to few shops and they all said need to repaint and some said close to factory but not 100%. One shop who works on BMW dealer cars said they add tint? to match the factory but still not 100%. I keep my car clean and scratches free and this is killing me.

I'm not sure what to do. Will paint the bumper lower the resell value?

first of all, relax, painting a bumper won't cause any resale value loss (unless going thru insurance) And second, if the shop does a solid job it shouldn't even be noticeable, that scratch is honestly, miniscule.

As for paint match, there should be no issue for you. It's away from the quarter panel, so when they do the repair, the new color will only be applied to that scratched area and nowhere near that adjacent panel. The rest of the bumper will get clear coated, and that is it.

Also, please keep in mind, as i said before, bumpers are always slightly off from the body. Go outside when its sunny and take a close look at it, you will see. Whenever i do a bumper job i always show a customer for themselves so they can see what I'm talking about, it's not just nonsense.

Got it done. The paint match is near perfect.
