this is interesting. i may pick one up. i have a huge tumbler and it doesn't fit most cup holders, let alone ours.

Not even my ///M coffee mug fits. Too slim and every time I accelerate it falls. At least it doesn't leak when tightened properly.

Agree on all of these...

- Artificial time lag added in the whole Idrive interface, probably by some misguided interface ergonomy programmer. Compared to a vending machine interface running on an older 8 bit microprocessor instantaneous response.

- Volume radio knob the side of a teton should be 3X the diameter (space was available !)

- Coupe windows are insufficiently supported inside the door resulting in a wobbly and reverberating door slam shut sound. Compared to Audi doors which slam shut like a freezer door. = much better Audi built

- cheap plastic used in the door rail easily blemished and scraped by shoes.

- All BMW AC are of inferior quality and operation. (evaporator not properly managed by software condensates water creating molds stink, rust and leaks ). 15 years old Acura AC is ice cold and never stinks.
... and I thought it was just my car. With respect to the coupe windows, the lack of support also means wind/rattle noise when driving.Stu!

Yes, just before deciding to order my M3 i testdrove the RS4 and S5 and the salesman pointed out how much more rigid the windows and door are in the Audi when you shut the door and he was right. I would go further and say that one E92 M3 out of 3 has excessive gaps in the exterior steel body. Having worked in the auto manufacturing industry, I know this is a direct quality indication for the steel used. It's not just due to thinner metal. Many other brand would not pass a car with the kind of gap you see on many M3's especially between the hood and the radiator.

I do feel in some areas the BMW quality is not as good as some peer german brands and definitively inferior to the Japanese obsession with creature quality. That said japanese cars reliability is inversely proportional to their performance. They're only reliable in utilitarian non-performance models.

I ordered one. Do you screw it to the console backing or does it just slide under and fit tight?

No screws or fasteners, just slip it under the center tunnel trim and bend the top as needed for a tight fit.

I heard this thing once awhile ago about the reason why German cars don't have cupholders, and it's the most German reason ever. When making their vehicles for the enthusiast the engineers felt there should be no reason a driver should ever be eating or drinking in the car, so they omitted cup holders to avoid distractions while driving that could either ruin the experience or get the driver killed.

Personally I don't ever use the cupholders and don't care how crappy they are.
