Radiator cover hole plate
I got tired of looking at that useless hole in the radiator cover so have been looking for some way to cover the hole. I went browsing at Home Depot and came across some matte black material (Wilsonart SKU 1595-60 http://samples.wilsonart.com/p-289-black-1595-60.aspx) that looked like it would be a good match for the black plastic cover. It turns out to be a perfect match. I then made a paper pattern and, using multipurpose shop scissors http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=36872
cut out a piece of matte black laminate large enough to cover the hole when affixed from underneath the cover. Removing the cover involves destroying eight expanding plastic rivets, P/N 51 16 8 197 908, at 30 cents each MSRP. I got a bargain from my dealer and only paid $1.08 each with a BMW Club discount I used Permatex black silicone adhesive to secure the plate and then applied aluminum HVAC tape.

Look Great! I have been wanting to do this for awhile. Although I don't know why you had to destroy the plastic rivets???? I have had that cover off at least five times and I am still using the same rivets..... they are very easy to take out with out destroying them

Silicone lubricant

Installed a cover today and the plastic expanding rivets were removed and replaced without incident. The secret is using the correct tool. On first glance the screw head looks to be Phillips, but upon closer examination I discovered them to be square female. The new rivets I installed were phillips head. The moral of the story is examine the rivets carefully and use the appropriate driver.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=194541 My version including the expanding rivets cost me about $15 and it looks like BMW made it that way.

what BMW roundel fits where you have placed yours?
Is it the same size as the hood or the trunk?

E46 and E90 trunk lid emblem
Quote:
This emblem has three posts on the backside so you can either drill holes in the radiator cover and secure the emblem like Ron Stygar did http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=160551 or, if you're lazy like me, simply cut off the posts and secure the emblem to the radiator cover with Permatex black silicone adhesive.

The hole doesn't really bother me that much, However I do have a powdercoating gun and oven so If I really wanted to do the whole crinkle finish blah blah I might try that when It gets even colder up here and I'm stuck for things to do to my M

Doesn't BMW sell a fancy metal overlay for that area with the roundel etched in?

I think is chromed plastic, very disappointing for those who ordered one. Correct me if I am wrong on this one. I haven't actually seen one.

cheap plastic rivets Glad I found this post
I'm glad I found this post I have been looking for those rivets but couldn't find the part number. I was looking for info on convertible top motor replacement and wandered across this post.
BMW of Alexandria does a lot of internet business and has these rivets for .39 which makes them a lot more palatable. http://parts.bmwofalexandria.com/pro...%252d908).html Gotta save as much $$$ as I can for the convertible top motor LOL |
