iPhone text messages

How do I view iPhone text messages in ConnectedDrive? Do I need to connect the phone via USB or is this possible via Bluetooth?

I have an iPhone 6s running iOS 10.

Unless you ordered enhanced bluetooth I believe you need to code the feature in.

Hold down the "voice command" button on the steering wheel and say "Siri, read me my text messages"

Done.

How do I know if I have enhanced bluetooth? The car was not made to order.

There will be a second mic on the passenger side.

I have enhanced BT, and I have never been able to get iPhone texts to show up.

On the phone you need to enable the Notifications for your car in the Bluetooth section of settings.

Use one of the online VIN decoders to check if your car was ordered with it.

I don't think that's correct. There's a setting to allow activating Siri from the wheel that was around well before iD5 and CarPlay.

I had a lot of trouble myself. I was able to get mine to work through BT only after connecting with USB first. Just make sure you have show notifications on in BT for the vehicle.

Where exactly do they appear for you? Are they overlaid on whatever is on the idrive screen, or do you have to view them through the office section?

Yes you have to view through office. A notification comes up on the display next to the time telling you there is a message. Then you just go to office to read.

When I first received my car (Nov 2014) I played around with different settings and was able to get text messages to appear in the HUD. I seem to recall a specific order in which things had to be launched to make this happen. Like the text message app on the phone has to be launched after the phone is already connected via Bluetooth to the car - something like that.

I have not seen text messages appearing in my HUD lately. Never thought it was a good idea to be text messaging while driving, so have not looked into figuring it out again.

Yeah, I am seeing that (a little envelope icon showing a new message in office).

I guess I was expecting it to somehow show the text (or at least a preview) in the HUD or iDrive. I don't think I'd ever use office to read texts. It's just to clunky.

It's actually really easy. It will also read them to you. You can program a radio button to go straight to messages.
