Smile Love the Contis...

Just got my car back from the dealer. Got an oil change after 7400 miles, fixed the rattling/popping sound from rear seat trim, fixed trunk lock (again) and ofcourse changed the RFT's to Continentals; had 7400 miles on the old Bridgestones... I have to say WOW. What a difference in the drive. The excessive road noice is gone.

Dealer swaped them out without any questions; all i mentioned to him was the road noise and he knew about the problem. Did mention that the new Bridgestones were redesigned; but put in the Contis on my request. And the engine noise is much better after the unscheduled oil change...

You got replacement tires for the RFT, because you complained about road noise? Hmmm got to try that one with my dealer. Nice work.

Not sure which... I do NOT have the sport package on my 328i sedan, so just the Turanza EL42's. There is a service buletin floating around here about unusual road noise on these particular bridgestone RFTs (only the E90's); the only catch being that the dealer will replace only if the customer complains. Its not a standard recall where a dealer will do when the car is in the shop.

And yes, there was no charge for the tire replacement and wheel balancing.

If they're all-season Contis, that would make them the Continental ContiProContact SSR's.

I think it is just he fact that the tyres are new, seems like the run flats are sort of OK for the first 5k miles or so, and after that they go down hill rapidly, been the same with the 5 series, 1 series and the 3 series.

Discussed at great length on the UK forums, also the run flats hate temperatures below 8 degrees C.

Got my 325i back from the service dept today. Dealt with the crappy Turanza's until 9750 miles and then complained about road noise. They offered to replace them w/ new Turanza's per the SB. I told them I wasn't overly interested in that and wanted the Conti's instead. A LITTLE prodding and they ordered Conti's for me --FOR FREE--. Picked it up today. WONDERFUL ride. Much quieter. Highly recommend this to everyone.

Anyone tried both the Continentals and the new Bridgestones? How do they compare.

I tried the Continentals on a loaner before and the difference between my "old bridgestones" and the contis is huge. MUCH quieter and absorbs bumps many times better. Regarding the grip, I haven't had a chance to compare both but seems like the Contis were slightly better.

Everyone keeps saying that the differences are huge, has anyone tried a car back to back with these tyes when they both have the same mileage on them?

We have been discussing this at length on the UK forums and the conclusion seems to be that the run flats are pretty much OK for the first 3-5k miles and then they need binning, so if you get out of a car that has tyres on that have done 5,6,7 --15k miles into a car with new tyres they are going to feel alot better.
But give those new tyres another 5k miles and they will be shot again.

BMW need to sort this out, as people are walking away from the brand thinking it is the suspension that is far too hard, even the service guy asked what suspension I had put on my car as it was the best riding one he had been in so far, when I pointed out all I had done was ditch the run flats he was amazed!

I wish BMW would have left adequate space under the trunk floor for at least a donut spare, so we'd have the option whether to go RFT or not like the E60's.

330xi ZSP's tend to come with 17" Conti all-season tires, so I'm not sure if it's batch related or connected to what options are on the particular car being built. Regardless, be glad yours did come with them

after changing wheels and putting non-run flats. i could definitely notice the quiteness.
btw to OP, which contis are you using? i have the extreme contact and the rears are just spinning like shit when wet even when in 2nd gear.

the problem with the run flats refer to all run flats? or just to bridgestones?

Which dealer? I need to get mine in. I'm at 9,000 miles. Wanted to get the tire issue addressed at first service but now I will exceed 10,000 miles by end of first week of May. Service not due until July. Guess that means two trips.

Are you talking about the ContiExtremeContact? I had those on my 6.9 and after 2-3 years of driving, it became suicidal to drive the car in the rain plus I found the sidewalls were way too soft. The one good thing I found about those Contis was that they were very progressive in losing grip; it was easy to make a controlled drift and bring the car back under control, as opposed to some other tires which grip until the bitter end and then suddenly let go entirely.

I recently replaced them with a set of Falken Ziex ZE-512, good price, very happy with them

I haven't seen any posters from the west coast (Specifically the Bay Area) say they got replacements, or that they even tried. Anyone...anyone?
I've put 22K on my tires so not sure if they'll replace them for me. I'll give it a try though.
